Hi all i have been wanting to try fleese in my piggies cage for ages now but cant see how it works i have been using woodshavings which i found good but very messy as i have 3 pigs i a indoor cage so here goes i have just put fleese over newspaper but left 1/4 of the cage with the plastic house full of hay with just newspaper under, they have just ventured out of the house and are sniffing it but chunk seems to want to bite it to bits well ill leave them for a while and let you no how they go throughout the day has anyone else found fleese better than the alternatives and how long before i have to wash it with 3 pigs in a 140 indoor cage thanx xx

With three pigs in an 140 cage you will probably need to wash it every second or third day. The smell will tell you when it's time! Some nibbling is normal, just watch it so that he doesn't eat any large amounts...

Some use fleece on newspaper, other put towels under the fleece too for added absorbancy. Some use shredded paper or megazorb under the fleece. You have to see what works for you.

I haven't used anyhing else than fleece and is very happy with it. Read some of the stickys on bedding (housing) if you're curious about other bedding :)

Good luck!

Have you washed the fleece before you used it? Make sure that you never use softener, or it will seal the fleece.

How often you have to change depends on how much of a water absorbent layer you have beneath the fleece. I would recommend that you get some cheap towels to form a layer between newspaper and fleece. That way, you won't have to change as often as with just newspaper.

I change every three days - but I have seven piggies in a big cage in the living room.

well its been a couple of hrs now and they are all asleep on the hay noone is on the fleese I'm going to give it till the end of today then see as i dont want them not using the part of the cage with the fleese on xx

ok its been 24 hrs and the fleese stinks and its soaked dont think i like it going to give it another 24 hrs i did think they would pee and poo in the plastic house which is filled with hay as this is what they normally do but no on the fleese and only on the fleese the little tinkers xx

if its wet change it,what have you got underneath to absorb the wee?i use a layer of newspapers then towels then puppy pads. when you wash the fleece remember not to use softener on it

Newspaper doesnt absorb very well, the fleece should stay dry when you use something absorbant underneath it.

It will need washing quite regularly, if it smells just think of what the piggies can smell :( Fleece has got to be better than woodsavings as it has health issues when used as Guinea pig bedding. But if your not happy with it though do look into alternative bedding and find what works for you.

i wasnt happy with fleece at first but it takes time to get used to it and know how to use it etc, persevere and you will soon find a way to cope with it

Fleece

We bought fleece for all our guinea pig cages but found that as they were so big washing the fleece was a problem as it wouldnt fit in the washing machine, was difficult to handwash and needed to be laid out in the garden on a sunny day to dry and got covered in hay which is difficult to brush out... i love the idea and its great but a bit of a hassle for large cages ... We also had a problem with one of our piggies getting cystitis from sitting in her arch for long periods on fleece where she had urinated.

I dont mean to put a downer on it but we have learnt a few things from using it. Its great stuff but our experience is that its not great for large cages and needs to be washed at least once a week otherwise it does smell/causes UTIs.

The plus side is that its not messy and is good for their little paws esp if your piggies are vulnerable to a bit of sore heels or bumble foot...and keeps them warm..

I have a big cage and it works for me, I wash it regulary, some parts every day, and you dont have to have one piece of fleece if it doesnt fit in the washer, have several pieces.
Also put the hay in cat litter/rabbit trays, and what does get on the fleece a quick shake/hand brush and my hay disappears. As for the fleece being wet, it shouldnt really get wet if there is an absorbant layer underneath and its washed with NO softener. The material shouldnt get so wet and smelly if clean outs are more frequent, I doubt if the Piggies enjoy living in their own smelly toilet, so for health reasons they should be cleaned out as oftern as you possible can.

I was washing my fleece every day, but I had a piggy with major bladder issues with blood in the urine, which was extra whiffy. Now I'm down to 2 piggies I am still washing every other day at the least. It stays nice and dry, but I would never want to leave it any longer than 2 days - it stinks by the time I'm putting it in the washing machine! :)>>>

Have a look at the all in one fleece pads that I use on my other thread.

It does cut down on the towels as towels can be slow to dry too.
