Hello there, I’m a longtime reader of all the advice on here and occasional poster. I just wanted to come and have a whinge as am feeling overwhelmed at the moment. We’ve 9 pigs and right now it feels like they’ve all decided it’s the perfect time to be poorly when needing urgent vet care is slightly more challenging than normal. We have a pretty good vet but I’ve only ‘met’ him via the phone so far due to lockdown but up until this week then he’s seemed to be brilliant.
I had Bella needing a spay In March and then took a long time to recover but thankfully did.
In April, Raffy started to lose hair from her sides and became very quiet so she was diagnosed with substantial ovarian cysts so needed an urgent spay which she had and thankfully recovered extremely well.
Rosie also at that time became extremely wet and smelt quite badly so I rushed her in and it transpired that she had a large bladder stone (no previous symptoms though) which was removed and after 2 weeks of antibiotics has recovered well.
For the last 3 weeks has been stable and then suddenly last weekend Barney suddenly started to struggle with eating. Barney is a huge foodie pig and he was suddenly doing all the classic mouth pain signs of big chews / ears waggling etc. We syringe fed him all weekend and he was able to see the vet on Tuesday. Barney’s face seemed slightly swollen on the right side, his eye was slightly swollen too and incisors slanted so we presumed that there could be an abscess brewing. He went in on Tuesday for what I thought (I spoke to the nurse when handing him over) was going to be an examination and anaesthetic to take xrays of his mouth and jaw. When the vet phoned me later then he said that there was so soft tissue swelling but no noticeable abscess and his teeth generally looked fine but he’d given them a burr and a tidy up (😕). He said there was a dark area on one of the xrays that could be elongated roots but he was more used to seeing them in rabbits. At this time my heart was sinking as I had a horrible feeling that we hadn’t had a correct diagnosis and Barney had just had a rabbit tooth trim. We got Barney back home and sure enough his incisors didn’t meet and he’s made no attempt to eat anything since. He occasionally mouths at food but won’t attempt to eat it. We’ve cut food into matchsticks, spiralised it, grated it but to no avail so we’re syringe feeding him. When we have tried to poke matchsticks of food in then he obviously can’t grind them up as he sounds like he’s choking on them and coughs and splutters so for safety’s sake we’ve stopped doing that. I phoned the vets on Thursday to explain that he still wasn’t eating and they said to give him vetergesic (he’s on septrin, metacam, metaclopramide) as well as he might be in pain. By Friday he was still no better so I phoned Cat and Rabbit and got an appointment for Tuesday morning. I was then panicking as obviously Cat and Rabbit want his notes from this week and as annoyed as I am about this dental then I don’t want to lose this vet as for all other surgeries then then our exotic vet has been great and Cat and Rabbit are 100 miles from me so I need a nearby reliable vet if I need urgent treatment. So I’ve been thinking all weekend about what and how to say to try not to offend our exotic vet’s knowledge but explain that Barney is definitely not right and I want him thoroughly checked but without an anaesthetic.
I’ve now come down this morning and there’s a strong smell of urine and Rosie (who lives with Barney) is soaking underneath again and I presume has another UTI (Rosie does get very stressed and I wonder if she’s stressed herself with Barney being so unwell) so I’ll be rushing her to the vets in the morning.
Saffy is also not really eating this morning and instead has taken to chewing vet bed and demolishing carrot cottages with ferocious ability and I’m wondering if she is either bloated or if she needs spaying urgently. I’m pretty convinced that she’s got cysts as she’s also a butternut squash shape but as she didn’t seem worried by them then I was going to leave them for a little while to see if they could be dealt with out of lockdown and also when our bank accounts had recovered from the previous surgeries that we’ve had to have over the past 10 weeks but it looks like I’ll try and get her seen tomorrow too.
If you’ve read my tale of woe then you definitely deserve a 🏅🏅. I’m not sure if there’s much advice that I can have, I just really wanted to put it all on paper as I just feel overwhelmed by it all and can’t understand what’s happening to all our pigs at the moment ☹️.

So sorry you are going through this. Animals really do pick their moments.
Glad you are seeing Simon/Kim on Tuesday. Really do hope all your piggies are feeling better soon.
Sending you massive hugs.xx

Thank you, it just helps knowing that you all understand

I’m sorry it all seems to be piling on at the same time. They do have a habit of picking the most inconvenient time to be ill. I hope that you can have them all on the road to recovery soon.

You are doing great and also everything you can for your piggies. I also have nine and I know how overwhelming it can be when things suddenly start to go wrong with a few of them! Don’t worry about what your vet did and I’m sure Kim and Simon will have an idea from what you tell them and when they look in Barneys mouth. I don’t know if vets exchange information but I have had Loxicom from our local vets after they contacted Kim and Simons practice When I needed extra painkillers for my then dental pig Jack - and they didn’t have a problem with it. Keep your chin up and it will get better. Hope Barneys trip to Northampton goes well.

I took my piggie Meg to The Cat and Rabbit to see Simon & Kim. I didn't want to offend my vets either as they are very good. I just sent my vets an email that said that I was taking my guinea pig to see Simon and Kim Maddock and would they kindly send Meg's notes up via email and put in the email address and left it at that. Meg's notes were sent up. My vets are very good but couldn't find out what was wrong with Meg as they aren't guinea pig specialists they just see alot of guinea pigs. Kim saw Meg and had diagnosed the problem in 20 mins.

Sending you a virtual hug.. gosh what a lot to be dealing with as well as a pandemic!

Sending you massive hugs, what a dreadful time you are having. Glad you are seeing Simon/Kim on Tuesday, they’ll get Barney sorted, what is it with vets cutting GP’s teeth like rabbits, had the same problem recently too with my Ted. Good luck hope you can get them all well soon x

Blooming heck Clare, I had no idea you had so much going on with your piggies. Huge hugs xx

Thank you all so very much for your kind words and thoughts...it helps so much to just know that other people understand. I’ll keep you posted as we find things out. Thank you all again for listening 💗

Today’s update is that Rosie has another UTI so is now on 2 weeks of Septrin and Metacam and Saffy has bloat so is on Cisipirade(?), Metaclopramide, Metacam, Septrin (just in case there’s an infection that’s caused the bloat) and her favourite carrot paste Fibreplex to add in some probiotics. Our exotic vet wasn’t in today so we saw another vet that we hadn’t seen before. I think she is just a small animal vet rather than an exotic but was excellent and wanted to thoroughly check Saffy to ensure there was no blockage and xray her to rule out ovarian cysts or anything else. It was really good to meet her and she certainly knew her stuff with regards to meds. Barney is brighter today and was drooling less when we’ve syringe fed him. I’m hoping that he’s feeling more comfortable today by his increased activity. He’s also come out food times and really tried to eat. I’m not sure if he’s eaten much but he really is trying which I’m hoping is a good sign. Long trip to Northampton tomorrow but hopefully it will be worth it.

Sending you piggy virtual hugs, hopefully everything will be ok. We currently have a poorly little pig and I've been ringing up and down the country for opinions from different vets.
😚

Thank you and I very much hope that you can get some correct help for your piggy too

Hello. Read your thread and wow you have a lot going on.
Really hope Barney starts to munch away etc. and your other well loved piggies get better. No time is right . . It broke me heart leaving my poorly piggie in a car park waiting to be picked up. I wanted to be with her. She's back home now and fingers crossed better. She sends your piggies hugs

Hope everything went well for your visit to Simon, he’s the best when it comes to piggies x
fingers 🤞 for Barney x

Hello there...so going to Simon was just brilliant, he’s so calm and I suppose as he’s seen so much before then just very matter of fact as to what it is and how it needs to be dealt with. Barney has a jaw abscess - which is quite probably the soft swelling that our vet saw and the dark area that our vet saw on the xrays. Simon said he could feel Barneys abscess in his jaw but it’s only small at the moment and typically in an awkward position for Simon to get to surgically at this time. Simon tidied Barneys teeth up but said they only needed a small amount of work and they weren’t too bad at all which was a real relief to hear. Simon went and got some grass for Barney from their garden and whatever he had done obviously made him feel better as he was able to eat some!
So the plan we came away with is to reassess Barney in 10 days to see how he’s doing so we’re going back down on Friday 19th. Barneys on 0.7 of Zithromax twice a day and Metacam twice a day and since Simon did his ‘tidying up’ then he’s back eating too which I could of cried at when I first saw. He’s not eating huge amounts so we’re still syringe feeding him too but he’s nibbling at salad, cucumber, pepper and baby corn and hay which is a huge improvement from 5 days ago. He’s also chasing the girls around too and getting back to his cheeky self which we’re so pleased about. He may well still need surgery to remove the abscess but we’ll be guided by what Simon says next Friday and see where we are.
Rosie is doing ok with her antibiotics, she’s still a little damp underneath but the strong UTI smell has gone which is good and Saffy has decreased hugely in size and is now piggy shaped instead of butternut squash shape. She’s also regained her appetite which is good to see. We’ll continue with all the meds and food and hopefully they’ll keep doing their job and get on top of these infections.
Thank you for all your support and kind words so far...it’s been hugely appreciated

I was hugely impressed with both Kim and Simon when they saw Meg. Unfortunately there is nothing anyone can do now. It's just a case of keeping her happy and giving her lots of happy todays. Pleased Barney is getting better.

I’m so sorry for you and Meg, I’ve been in that situation too and it’s very tough but I hope that you still have lots of happy days together. Thank you so much re Barney, the visit to Cat and Rabbit was most most definitely worth it for their expertise and knowledge x
