i was told a vet had checked the over!
so it looks like I'm going to be busy!
if any one might want to adopt an baby males please let me know as i should be ok with females but dont know if i will manage the boys

Aw no, I had the same thing happen to me. She had only one baby though and I kept him. Looks like you'll be very busy, good luck with all the babies :)

Sadly, pregnant pet shop girls are by no means uncommon. I started my adult piggy life as a shop granny as well.

Please separate your girls. Birth can trigger premature labour in another pregnant sow present and lead to dead born or short lived babies. You can go and ask p@h for an extra cage and provisions, due to pregnancy in your newly bought sows. They usually provide them. Early pregnancy is not easily detectable and piggies can be impregnated during transport when all are thrown together, often for days on end if they are imported from piggy farms abroad. That is what happened to my surprise mummy.

Do not feed extra until the babies are born. 1cup/50g of mixed fresh veg per piggy per day - each serving preferably containing a portion of pepper or broccoli for the extra vitamin C needed. please do not feed parsley until after the birth. Pellets topped up as your girls are probably less than 6 months old? Timothy hay as much as they can eat, with added alfalfa hay during late pregnancy and nursing for the pups' bones.

Please ask any questions you may have. it would be good to have your vet's number and the emergency/out-of-hours vet number ready just in case. You do not want to scramble for them when you are in a panic! You can get the emergency vet number from your vet or his answering machine.

I can warmly recommend that you contact this rescue who are members on here. They are active all over the North West and very supportive and helpful. I have rehomed from them myself as I have gone strictly reputable guinea pig rescue since my surprise babies!

This is Logiebear's website; Skelmersdale is obviously closer to Manchester than I'd assumed! Unfortunately, you will only be allowed to send and receive personal messages after 50 posts.

Hi there,

Sadly shop bought piggies being pregnant is not rare and it is so sad. I am sure they will be great mummys and good luck with the births. Weibke has put my website on already and my email is [email protected] so you can contact me for advice or you can use the forum. I would be willing to help with rehoming your babies if you need me to so please get in touch if I can help.

Thanks

Suzanne xx

It wasn't by any chance Pet at Home was it XD

The amount of animals i and my friends have got from their where something turns out to be wrong is stupid,

I brought my rabbit Max from their, when i got him they were unsure of weather he was a male or a female, so i asked if he could be checked over by the vet as i wanted a female.
He got checked over and the vet said he was deffo a female.
Well a couple of weeks later it became obvious he wasnt a she at all.. i was well annoyed as i almost brought a friend for Max, so i would have had babies if i had..
But its just the fact even their vet got it wrong

My friends hamsters were ment to be sisters, turned out one was infact a male.
Another friend adopted a "young" male guinea pig to find out he was actually 6 years old!

People are very annoying XD

ema3080 (sorry put the wrong name in the title)

We bought 2 girls from Pets @ Home and they were both pregnant, we ended up with 6 because of it.

If you are struggling to home them, then demand that they give you a free hutch.

We did and ended up with a double hutch free of charge, plus free vets check ups for all of them.

thanks for all your advice guys just got back from pets at home an i have to say the manager was very helpful ive got a new huge rabbit cage, food, etc plus they are going to pay for my vet to check them over as i said i didnt trust there vet as if he hadnt noticed that they were pregnant then thats a worry! so both girls are in seperate cages now so i feel better
so all i have to hoope now is that the birth goes ok!

thanks for all your replies il keep you updated

Good luck with your girls!

Please feel free to post whenever you have questions or a problem!

Glad that good for nothing shop has done the decent thing for once. Hope the pregnancies go well, you've had some fab advice from everyone on here. Good luck xx

hi just in response to the person who said my new piggies will be less than 6 months old the are not due to the fact i adopted them from pets at home so they are older I'm more concerned that maggie is really old than young to be honest, she has really old looking eyes i know that sounds strange but if you see her ul know *** i mean
I'm taking them both to the vets in the morn to get checked over,
i have had pregnant piggies before so hope il be ok
thanks for the advice wish me luck

all went well thanks maggie is going to have a huge litter, both piggies are pregnant!
the vet said that they are lucky to have gone to a loving home:O)
and i took them on there own cushions and they werent stressed out at all bless my girls they were so good :O)

Bless them, I hope that all is going well!

There is a sadly higher risk of dead born babies in a very large litter; to much competition and too little space at the end. I think it is better if you know that this can happen, so you are not too shocked in case it does (which I SINCERELY hope will not!). Maggie has obviously been bred from before.

I will keep my fingers crossed for your girls. Please keep us posted!

That happens all the time I got my 2 girls from a pet shop a month later they both gave birth 2 days between each other one had 5 and one had 2 I was very busy finding homes for them all cause I could only keep 2 girls I don't think I will buy from a pet shop again rolleyes

yer cheers for your advice the vet did say in bigger litters there is a higher risk of still born :O( i hope this isnt the case for maggie, she also said that it looks like she has had a brood before plus even the receptionist said my god look at the size of her shes the size of a cat!!!
i took her down to the manager at p@h an he looked totally shocked at the size of her! he had been off for two wks an came back the day after i got my girls!
he said if he had seen her he would of known, he did seem a nice guy an did say if they need anymore treatment that they will pay so that has put my mind at rest, he said the woman who brought them in was tellin him she had no time for them an she had no males! so that was a lie!
i gave I'm a letter from the vet too to confirm they were pregnant he said hes goin to take it up with there vet so i said while ** there * might want to ask WHY THERE CLAWS WERE ALL CURLED UP TO !

he said he will :p
