I was stood in the queue at Tesco this fair evening, and I spotted some paper based cat litter...

I wondered if this was in any similar to the more expensive versions for small animals? I want to move to paper based in the corners on the newspaper, and am looking for cost effective, SAFE, ways.

Thanks

Hx

Cat litter is no use for guinea pigs as they try to eat it and it can get stuck in their guts.

The OP is talking about paper based cat litter, which is fine for both piggies and buns.

I used to buy paper based cat litter to use in the C&C but to be honest it still works out quite expensive so I changed back to just newspaper and hay and just change it more often :)

I just looked online and it's £3.29 for 10 litres so quite cheap which is always a plus. If it's 100% recycled paper with no added things like nappy crystals or chemicals then I'm tempted to give it a go at some point.

For the sake of comparison, I've just started using Breeder Celect in my pigs hay trays and for my rats and it's fantastic in terms of absorbency and odour control. It's made by the same company as Back to Nature bedding and the only obvious difference is the pellets in Back to Nature are slightly flatter. I got the cat litter because it was £10 for a 20 litre bag and the Back to Nature was £5.99 for a 10 litre bag (from P@H I'm afraid). It is available online though and you can get BtoN in 30 litre bags for £12.99 plus P&P.

Another paper pellet that I was planning on trying is Papelit (from finacard) which is £12.50 for 30 litres with free delivery. I was also going to try finacard itself (or ecopetbed) which are both shredded card beddings that are recommended for rats.

I'm having a bit of a mad substrate search as well at the moment, trying to balance cost, efficiency and safety.

Can you get green mile by you...?
It's card board bedding but it's way better than finacard...
Pretty cheap aswell... I'd use it more oftern but there's nowhere local to me that stocks it...
