Hi, I’m introducing two female guinea pigs right now, and they’ve been doing something weird. It’s not happening constantly, but they’ve jumped at each other a few times? They, particularly the younger of the two, will leap at the other. It hasn’t gone to a fight, and I’m watching them both closely, but it’s a little concerning.

Right now they’re just sitting together eating some hay and romaine lettuce.

btw
it doesn’t look like they’re lunging at each other, the jump just looks weird.

They’ve been together for about an hour now, and they’re still teeth chattering, rumble strutting, etc. The older of the two isn’t really letting the younger close to her.

Hi

Lunging can run the whole gamut from mild slightly forward jumps to flying tackles, depending on how strongly a piggy feels and how afraid they are.

Your girls have now advanced from acceptance to the hierarchy sort-out. A dominant, especially noticeably older/larger piggy will often insist on a personal sphere until they are happy with how things are running, which can take 2 weeks or more. Please keep in mind that the whole bonding process lasts on average 2 weeks and that you are still in the earlier stages of the introduction. The fact that they are resting and eating close together in between dominance rounds is encouraging.

So you think I should keep them together? The younger one lunged and took out a chunk of the other guineas fur a minute ago, and i’m worried. No injuries, but my older girl is stressed out.

I’ve just been getting bad vibes for most of the time i’ve been introducing them.

I would separate in this case. Things are obviously not heading in the right direction.

Please keep in mind that I can only comment on what you report but that I do not have direct access to your piggies to judge the body language etc. myself. As long as things are in the 'maybe' range, you are in with a chance. Once they get to fur pulling, that is the sow equivalent of a boar fighting bite and is the end of the road for sows.

Hey, I’m sorry, it looks like I was being a bit paranoid with this. They had no further instances like that, and they’ve been getting along very well since then. I’m definitely keeping an eye on them, but things seem to be going well so far!

I hope that they can settle together.
