the day before yesterday I noticed my skinny pig , 4 year old Jeremy, was making a lot of noise breathing. He sounded very crackley like he was eating a packet of crisps. This was at around 11.30 pm and I became so concerned that I took him to an emergency out of hours vet , he was diagnosed with possible early stage pneumonia and given a antibiotic and anti inflammatory injection. But I’m concerned his breathing sounds no better, he is eating and drinking normally and reasonably active, can anyone tell me how long it should be before he sounds better? Should I take him back to the vet? He has antibiotics to take for the next few days. Any advice would be very appreciated..

I’m sorry to hear that Jeremy isn’t well but it’s good that he’s still eating and acting normal. It sounds like you have caught his pneumonia in the very early stages. It can take a few days for the antibiotics to kick in. If he’s no better by the time the antibiotics are finishing, I’d take him back to the vets but obviously take him back sooner if he worsens

I would see if you can get him seen sooner than the end of his antibiotics. I would usually expect an improvement within a couple of days, so I would be a bit twitchy by now. He may need a longer or different course of antibiotics. Poor Jeremy

Thank you for your advice but I had to rush Jeremy back to the vet a couple of hours ago and they said he was much sicker than we’d thought. I’m devastated to say I had to have him put to sleep.

OH NO! I'm so sorry that Jeremy didn't make it.:( He was a lovely boy and he is out of his suffering now. He is over the Rainbow Bridge and has all his favourite food. Sleep well lovely boy.

I’m so sorry for your loss. What a shock that must have been. Just know you did the very best for him that you could. Hugs.

I am so sorry to read this.
You did everything possible for Jeremy. He was a lucky pig having such a loving and caring owner.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

Thank you to everyone for their kind words. Losing Jeremy has been awful 😢 he really was the best , gentlest, sweetest guinea pig anyone could ever hope for.

Just take your time. They may be little in size but they leave big holes in your heart when they leave us x
