My son's guinea pig Andre a few weeks ago stopped eating through research we learned he needed his teeth trimmed sent him to two different vets one for the front one for the back teeth. 2nd time vet said he thought he may have a jaw problem thru X-ray it seems one of the bones on the side of his jaw was wearing away. His jaw was popping in and out according to the vet. He sugessted we put him down. I want to make sure I have done all I can before I do that he is only 2 and a very good boy. We have been suringe feeding him 4-5 times a day at this point. Has any one ever had this problem and is there any one in the Milwaukee, WI area that is a good vet for something like this?

awww sorry to hear your having problems, sadly a lot of vets say pts without researching every possible avenue for a soloution, i personally haven't come across this but maybe someone else on here can help.

hope little Andre is ok.

Oh the poor thing. Welcome to the forum. I've no experience of this my pigs are arond the 1 year old mark so I'm yet to face big problems such as this.

To be honest for me PTS is the very last resort. If you can syringe feed and maybe get to a guinea savy vet that may be the way to go. This forum is mainly based in the UK but we do have some overseas members. Have you tried Guinea Lynx they have a medical forum and you may find more help searching for a vet that way.

Good luck

Louise

poor piggy

am so sorry to hear about your son's piggy. i would NOT pts till i have tried everything first. have no idea how far you are from new york but a member on here is from there and she has a good piggy vet. welcome to the forums from me and the girls from oz.:)p:)p:)p i know what you mean about piggy vets they are hard to find here in south oz too. have you tried the peter gurney website? good luck sending xx>>>xx>>>xx>>> to your piggy.

I had a problem with my previous piggie's teeth. I took her to one vet who said because of the angle her teeth were at it was putting the jaw out of line which meant that the teeth were not wearing down correctly. Found another vet who said there was no problems like that and that her teeth just needed regular trimming which ended up being about once every 6 months. I would personally not put her to sleep and find a vet who is willing to clip/file your piggie's teeth without anesthetic.

Where abouts are yo?. Someone on here might be able to recommend a good vet who knows about dental work.
Pts should definitely be the last resorts, some vets are far too quick to give up on piggies unfortunately:0

I am in Wisconsin the city is Milwlaukee. I did make an appointment with another vet for next Saturday for a second opinion he is a small animal / exotic vet hope this works. The first vet did not seem to know very much about them but yet he said he could trim the molars so now I am realizing that might be where I make the mistake I am hoping so. Are their any good recipies anyone has for mushed up food right now we are giving him the pellets smashed in water and baby food.

Most of the people on this forum are in the UK. Have you tried www.guineapigcages.com/forum (I hope the mods won't mind) It is a US based so someone on there should be able to recommend a good local vet.
Mashed up pellets and baby food are good. If you have a food processor you can actually blend some raw veggies.
Have you been given Critical Care? it's made by Oxbow and I know that you can definitely buy it in the US. Your vet should have it too. It's a complete food that you just mix with water and syringe feed. I would definitely recommend you get some of this as they can go downhill very quickly when they are not eating.

You are doing a great job. I hope you find a good vet soon.

Veg baby food is good to give or mashed up pellets with water. You could try grating carrot as sometimes this tempts guineas to eat as there isn't much chewing. Chop small pieces of soft food like cucumber or banana. Your piggie might not be getting enough water so syringe water hourly so he doesn't get dehydrated. After syringing food or if he eats small amounts then syringe water into the mouth to try and move any pieces of food that may be stuck. Plenty of hay is a must. Hope this helps x

Does anyone know how to buy a Chin Sling I am in the United States and am having a real hard time finding one just in case my vet recomends this.

Chin slings are not really suitable for gps.

Give some vitamin c supplement while he is unable to eat properly.

son's piggy

hoping all goes well at the second vet, am so glad the little mite is enjoying being syringe fedxx>>>xx>>>xx>>> sending hugs and healing vibes your way and please keep us posted:rose:rose:rose
