Hi, my Guinea Pig Chocho just been to the vet today.
He has been not eating very well since Wednesday. They told us that he have overgrown teeth. He had the surgery today and have put him in general anaesthetics. Later, they told us that he has jow misalignment. They told us that if my guinea pig can’t eat very well again, we should consider puting him into sleep.

Has anyone have the same experience?

Not misalignment but there are a lot of piggies on here with dental issues. Up to now they’re doing well and have never needed putting down.

You need to weigh him daily at the same time and also start syringe feeding him to keep his gut moving and also help him maintain. Is the vet guinea pig savvy? I think there aren’t many who are experienced with doing dentals etc.

I’ll tag @furryfriends (TEAS) our resident expert on dental piggies. We are a U.K. based forum so you'll have to be patient.

In the meantime have a read of the threads below. And also add your location to your profile.

They just told us that if he can’t eat, we have to put him down. I am just wondering if you have any idea how long will it take before a guinea pig gets back eating to normal after teeth trimming ? Thank You .

I can’t tell you I’m afraid. Of the piggies I’ve heard about who are treated by Simon in Northampton, they usually are eating within hours, and the rentals are done conscious. Where are you located?

I’m located in Chelmsford. If I have known, I should have gone to that vet. I’ve read many good feedback about them. My guinea pig eats okay afterwards but could not eat solid food at the moment. I am worried if this is normal ? Thank you so much.

I don’t know as won’t guess either. I have absolutely no experience with dental piggies. Was he prescribed anything for pain?

I would highly recommend you try and get your piggy to Northampton to be seen by Simon. Ring them up this morning and let them what’s happened so far. See what they say. It wouldn’t be a wasted trip. There’s someone in the south west who took their piggy to a nearer dentist. They botched up the job and so they took piggy to Northampton. Within a short time of being seen by Simon, he was eating.

unfortunately all vets on the list are quite far from you. Which one did you take him to?

You need to go see Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton and let him have a good look at his teeth. If he is not eating it’s probably because your vets have not done the dental correctly. Don’t have him PTS, we were told the same after a dreadful dental 2 years ago by a local vet. We took him to see Simon and he was eating hay within 10 minutes of a conscious dental and he’s still around today. The cost is very reasonable because there’s no anaesthetic x
