wanted to share this & maybe anyone else has similar experiences?
in early may i started to notice one of my guinea pigs loosing weight quickly. i checked him over and all we could see were that his teeth were very wonky. after taking him to the vets we found he had a jaw abscess in the bone. the vet decided it would be best to not try to flush it & gave us antibiotics and pain killers for him. he had an inscredibly poor prognosis as it was in the bone & fairly big already. still, we gave him his meds & critical care for a week or so. unfortunately the abscess kept growing & it eventually burst. from then on we continued meds & flushing it out daily. after a while the wound healed over and the abscess didnt get any worse for around a month. unfortunately then it did start to grow again & got really big before we decided to cut it open and flush it out again. at this point the bone had deformed but he seemed happy enough, so we wanted to keep trying until he seemed bad enough to pts. and to our suprise after a few more weeks of meds & flushing the abscess healed over again & hasn’t grown back since. of couse i know it is still there, but the last time we flushed it was in july and he is happy as ever now. gained all the weight back, no wonky teeth etc. no pain meds etc, just a slightly deformed jaw that’s causing no issues. he gets checked weekly but its not growing back yet. anyone else had the same experience? he was given weeks to live & he’s now perfectly fine around 6 months later (temporarily but still)

I’m so pleased your piggy has recovered from their abscess. It does take quite a while to clear these things up.

Yes I’ve had a similar experience with my Pepper. He had a tooth root abscess. It took about two months to clear. He has a damaged bottom incisor as a result of the infection. But he is managing well. He hasn’t put the 350g he lost back on but is maintaining his weight now. At one point I thought he would never start to eat again. Here is his story if anyone is interested or going through something similar.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

This is great news, so pleased for you both. Abscesses are horrible things and take dedication to overcome. Thank you for the update, I’m sure this will encourage any owners that are going through the same problem with their piggie 😊

I'm glad your piggie is doing well! We had one who made a full recovery for a terrible jaw abscess too. It took a lot of time but besides some surface scarring from where the abscess was lanced she did great! :)

Thank you for the update. So glad that you have got past it!
