Hi there,

This is less of a call for help and more of a call for moral support.

Our pigs were getting looked after by my parents while we were on holiday last week. We had the house painted before that so they've been over there for a few weeks. I get a horrible phonecall from my parents this morning telling me that the Harvey our boar wasn't well. They said he was wobbly, his eyes were half shut and he was making a bad sound when he was breathing. They rushed him home and tbh I was convinced that he wasn't going to still be here when he got home. But he was.

I was shocked at how much weight he'd lost (300g!) and had an abscess the size of a plum on his face. His teeth (he only has 3 inscicors) don't look great either. Rushed him to the vets who lanced it and sent me off with antibiotics and a painkiller. Disappointingly not the banana smelling stuff just baytril. But at this point I'll take anything he's in such poor condition.

Managed to get 5ml of food down him and a few ml of water. He's had an abscess before and we were told to massage the Lance hole to make sure that the hold doesn't close up to make sure the abscess continues to drain. So I'm doing the same here. I've massaged what feels like +10mls of foul stinking puss out of his face twice since the vet lanced it this morning.

I've promised Harvey that I'll try my best to get him on the mend in the next 24hrs. Personally I tend to go with the rule that if a guinea is not taking food off the spoon, they don't really want to be here anymore and I shouldn't be forced via syringe but since this has been caught so late I want to give him the best chance even if that chance isn't looking great at the moment because he's so weak.

We don't really know what caused it. maybe the root of his old removed tooth is still there has caused an infection. It's just a shame its been caught so late. But I don't blame my parents. They don't seem to have the guinea pig 6th sense that I do (my husband doesn't either). And at 6yrs old Harvey has had a good run. I know what to do and I'm going to try my darnest to help him through the next 24hrs with syringe feeding and the drugs I have.

If he picks up, I'll phone the vets up again to see whether I can get a check up with my usual vet who looks after all of my small furries. (Today was just a locum I think). Hopefully get some banana antibiotics (if I'm allowed now we've been put on a course of baytril.) If anyone knows the name of the banana smelling antibiotic that would be a great help.

Send your healing vibes for Harvey (and your strength for me as I embark of the syringe feeding marathon). Keep all your paws crossed for the next 24hrs. <3

Sending healing vibes for Harvey. I know that syringe feeding is hard work but it will help get him through this, especially if the antibiotics cause a tummy upset.

Sending healing vibes to Harvey and a hug to you. I really hope he can recover from this. ❤️

Poor Harvey, I'm so sorry! I hope he pulls through with some tender loving care.

In my experience, any med can be a banana-smelling med, I've had Baytril mixed with banana flavoring before. I have a pig on longterm antibiotic suppression and used to mix the untitrated Baytril in a vial with the banana base at home myself.

Thanks for the support guys. Unfortunately Harvey left us at around 8 o'clock tonight. After initially picking up after the dose of meds, he was slowly declining with every syringe feed and hadn't passed any poops since he got back home. Eventually I made the decision to stop the syringing and leave him be. It wasn't fair to put him through that extra stress and discomfort in his final few hrs.

He was our happy chappy. Always popcorning during the post cage clean survey (just to make sure no one had invaded his turf while he was gone).

He leaves behind Petal who's only 1-1.5 but is already a special needs piggy. She seems to have made peace with it instantly in that guinea pig stoic way. All of my pigs seem react that way anyway when one of the herd leaves for the forever sleep. (What I would give to know what they were thinking!)

I feel very bad for my parents especially. They love their grandpiggies and they'll be feeling responsible for Harvey's death and very guilty they didn't pick up his symptoms sooner. It's the worst thing having to stay strong on the phone to your parents letting them know the news your guinea has died when you can hear them upset on the other end of the phone.

But it's been a very stressful day with very limited work done so it's time for an early night tonight and phone the crematory tomorrow. Thanks for being there guys. It is very much appreciated. :)

I am so sorry to hear your very sad news. Harvey had a brilliant life with you, you did all you could for him. Sending you all hugs and my very best wishes.

I’m so sorry Harvey has gone over the rainbow bridge. Take care ❤️

I’m so sorry for Harvey’s sudden decline and passing. Huge hugs x
