Hi I would be very grateful if anyone is able to answer the following questions for me...

1. When I squirt the syringe in, he absolutely hates it and really flinches. It's just cooled boiled water and I don't actually put the syringe in the hole, just point it at it. Is it normal that an abcess flush would cause pain?

2. The abcess looks like it's black inside - is this normal?

3. The hole seals up again really quickly after I flush it. Is there a way of keeping it open?

He is on zithromax 0.5ml and loxicom 0.3ml both twice daily, had a concious dental on Tuesday at Cat & Rabbit. He's normally very perky boy but has really gone downhill in the last few days : ( I was going to call them tomorrow and ask if he can have any additional pain relief such as tramadol.

Many thanks

I can’t answer the question as it’s been a while since I had to flush an abscess and it wasn’t in such an awkward place.
Hope the vets can help tomorrow.
Holding you in my thoughts

Hi

You need to hold the syringe tip into the opening (not pushing it in, just holding it against it; but making sure that the water goes into the abscess and reaches the pouches where the infection sits. Push hard on the plunger to get the mild disinfectant as deep as possible). It is NOT pleasant for you piggy but it is necessary.

Even less pleasant is working off the scab forming over the opening every time. Your piggy will hate you for it but it is vital to make sure that the abscess can heal from the inside out and drain for as long as possible as every little speck of infection stuck inside can start it all over again. Ideally you keep the abscess open for up to 10 days but a minimum of 5 days.

Jaw abscesses are my personal nightmare condition where I am pretty crap at (not the stink; just the rest), so you have my full sympathy.

Your piggy will forgive you once they are better again. Give them plenty of fuss afterwards and a treat.
