any advice would be great.
Thanks

Oh no...not my special Foster boy :(

Could it be mites Trudy? I will have a look around for you now and see what comes up. :)

thanks louise much appreciated, none of the others are showing signs of baldness, so dont know what it is, he keeps trying to bite/scratch it.

All that keeps coming up is fungal problems. I would maybe get him to a vet to check him over. Is he alright otherwise?

I've just read that some do shed Pudsey certainly did but I found that was at the start of spring. Hope he is ok. x

Looks like the hairloss could be due to mites. Do not panic a quick trip to the vets tomorrow for an injection is all thats needed. Piggie will need three lots of injection spaced 7/10 days apart. All piggies you own will also need to be treated too. Its not expensive but the quicker they seen to the quicker they will be better.

yeah other than that he is fine, not stopped his hunger at all, hehe he still keeps eating and drinking nothing else he doesnt seem off colour at all.

Hehe I missed a comma! What I meant was Pudsey being a Texel cross lost some hair through him moulting. I took him the vet and there was nothing wrong he said it was just moulting for the summer.

What makes me think Jasper has mites is the location of the hair loss. Bless him. :)

Michelle do all pigs need doing or is it just cage mates? God help me if one of mine get them! rolleyes

Just those in close contact I would say need treating. But if they share a run thats been on the same patch I would treat all involved. I always quarinteen too. Spot on might be a good idea for the rest though.:)

Hiya it just looks like what Murphy had the first time he had it when he came to me (RSPCA foster piggy) that stayed.

First time he had injections. Second time he had it i took him to the vets and he gave me some spot on which is called Xeno 450 i was given two lots to put on him a week apart, apparently they use this now as the injections are meant to be painful.

I took along Romey as she lived with him at the time and the vet checked her and she was ok he said that they dont always pass on to cage mates.

When you look at the bald patch can you see what looks like little dandfuff flakes? Thats just how Murphys looked.

Best of luck. Let us know how you get on as i will be interested to see if your vet treats mites the same as ours did.

Lindsay x

PS dont worry the vet will soon sort it out.

Thanks for that Michelle, always handy to know. :)

Cuzzy had the jabs and it really did the job. As Lindsay said don't worry he will be fine. :)

This does look like mites,so a visit to the vet for ivermectin is called. As another member has already mentioned this is now available in topical form.

There is no need to have the companion gps dosed if they are not showing signs of mites.

All gps have mites and normally they do not cause a problem, but if the gp is unwell,,or stressed for any reason the mites proliferate and cause irritation. Some gps are more prone than others.
There is no such thing as cage mites, just mites.

Yes that's what I thought Mary that you didn't need to treat the other guinea pigs unless they were showing signs of having the same thing. Last time I went to the vets with this he said I had to take all 3 of them even though only one of them had it - it seemed wrong to put the other two through painful injections when they didn't need them.:(

Hi Trudy,

Mites aren't caught as Mary said they always have them its just the can come out more on pigs. They can come out in times of stress.

Have you made an appointment?

About £15 of that would of been consultation fee the injection would of been about £4.50. When mine had mites just after I got them it cost around that e for the first visit then just £8 for the remaining two visits:)
