Hi,

My daughter is a new guinea pig owner. We think one has got mange mites and would like to get some Ivermectin to treat her/them.

Can anyone help by telling me where I could buy this medicine, please? I am a doctor so weighing and measuring the right amount will not be problem.

PLease help.

Thanks,

Bo

I get mine from a farm supplier as i use a lot, you can buy the spot on preparation from good pet shops (although I don't think it is effective as giving it orally). Obviously a vet can get it for you or you can contact Vedra at the Cambridge Cavy Trust. if you are a member of the CCT you get free 3 monthly preventative Ivomec and wormer. depends if you live near Cambridge or not!
Good luck

The only caution with Ivermectin is not to use it on baby guinea-pigs and to follow the instructions, as you can kill the guinea-pig if you OD on it (but that's usually with injected Ivermectin).

As an alternative, I bought organic Neem oil off eBay for 5 pounds (it will last me years) and used that; it was brilliant as we were even able to use it on our 6-week-old guinea-pigs who were too young for Ivermectin. Although the breeder told us to dab a weeny amount of the Ivermectin onto the back of their necks, the application was too small to have any effect. Neem oil is a bit messier than Ivermectin as you have to apply the oil (diluted with carrier oil) to the whole guinea-pig (avoid the eyes), leave it for a few days, shampoo it off, wait several days, and then repeat. After we'd shampooed the last application off, their coats were really soft and silky (and still are). We've not had an occurrence of the mites since September. It even worked on a boar we 'rescued' from a pet shop who was scabby, lethargic and thin due to the mites.

If you're interested, here's the link to Peter Gurney's site on how to use it:

It might be best to take your piggie along to the vet who will be able to diagnose mites for sure. Then hopefully the vet will treat them for you too. It is worth getting a definite identification before treating the piggie for mites, just in case x

Thanks for advice

Thanks to you both for advice. As it happens, we actually live IN Cambridge! So I'll follow the advice and contact the CCT.

ON the other note: can you buy Neem oil anywhere other than the net?

Thanks!

Health food shops - even Holland & Barrett. It will likely be more expensive though. As you live in Cambridge, I would definitely go to the CCT; many vets haven't a clue about guinea-pigs (the CCT is also likely to be cheaper and Vedra is THE expert on guinea-pigs - she has far more experience with guinea-pigs than any vet, too).
