3 weeks after getting my girls I'm measuring up for a new bigger cage 😃 Our current one does meet welfare requirements but of course I want to provide the best I can. I want a C&C, I've seen so many gorgeous set ups online. I can get a bit obsessive once I'm set on a new idea so think I need to back away until finances allow 😳

I've been pottering around with my tape measure and even considered replacing furniture to accommodate for a bigger cage. The things we do for our piggies!

I'm considering chucking my husband out to make more room, but then I'd have no one to catch spiders for me :lol!:

Husbands have their uses. I need mine to catch the spiders as I am :yikes: :yikes: TERRIFIED :yikes::yikes: of spiders. I am even uncomfortable with money spiders.

Sounds like you are now a proper slave. They have trained you very fast!

It never stops! I finally moved my boys into a 2 by 4 C&C 😀 cage after a year of having them in a series of inappropriate cages 😔 I think the feeling of "yes I've finally got them a lovely cage!" lasted about a month before I started looking at other ideas online 🙄 currently saving up to expand.

Haha so glad to know I'm not alone and that this a normal stage of my slave induction-ship. I'm not fond of spiders either, what would happen if one crawled into a cage? Would my girls eat it?

Maybe we shouldn't think about it 😣

I've seen my skinny pig Tallulah eat a spider and last summer jump up and catch a couple of flies and eat them like you might see a cat do... but she's a bit of a weirdo, I think piggies mostly ignore spiders!
Good luck with the cage, I abandoned my idea of a dining room or a home office then got rid of a sideboard and a set of drawers to realise my C&C dreams- we started off with a pet shop cage and 2 piggies in April 2018 then somehow within 8 months that evolved into 6 piggies and a 26 sqft C&C... then we got more 2 piggies and another C&C cage in the living room!
Here's what may happen with a C&C cage because its so easy to buy an extra 3x2 room or two to add on then get a few more piggies to fill it...

Your set up is gorgeous 😍 I'm sure my children don't actually need beds, or furniture right? I love the idea of the C&C expanding one grid at a time overnight, slowly taking over the house!

On a serious note though, does anyone have experience of the lids for c&c? We have cats so can't have an open set up. Do they lift up as one giant lid or can you can just open up a smaller "hatch" area to get access?

I used to have a lid on mine boys playpen before it all got changed up and they basically took over the entire shed!. The back row of grids remain fixed to the connectors and were cable tied to the front row (which was actually two overlapping grids so that they don’t buckle) and it opened as one row ( so basically as a 1x4 panel) but ultimately you can do it however you like by cable tying where necessary to enable hatches if you prefer

I bought a lid then repurposed the grids to go 2 grids high but that was to keep out a small child with ADHD not a cat! I think you could easily build a lid with spare grids cable tied to make it secure then have an access hatch that's only cable tied on one edge so you can lift it... the lids you can buy are half overlapped grids with a support bar so the whole thing lifts I think...

Thanks for the speedy replies, sounds like I might be better to make my own lid rather than buy the ready made lid unit as I'd prefer to not have to lift a whole 2x4 bit up! Definitely lots to consider.

I bought a lift for my 6x2 (a kit from candccages.co.uk) but I must admit I found it really cumbersome and wobbly, though the cage itself was fab. In the end I dismantled the lid and made a new bigger loft space for the pigs instead! I would definitely try and do a diy lid if you can.

That's really helpful thanks, diy seems to be the best option! Will try and find some pictures /videos for inspiration.

I had this lid from candcguineapigcages.co.uk but you could make it yourself. It was because of the neighbour's cat who kept coming in and trying to hunt the pigs. It worked well.

That's unbelievable Tallulah doing that. Are skinny pigs quite different pigs?

I did see that lid but now to further complicate things I want to try and make a front opening set up instead of top opening. I don't even know if it's possible?!

I have literally never seen a whole front opening to a c and c cage. 3 sides only to a c and c wouldnt be stable unless a grid base or lid would stabilise it. I've had myself and seen, where one grid opens at the front like a door. It's nice to hand feed and pat your piggies from the top of a c and c. This needs an architect 😊

I completely understand what you're saying, unfortunately the only place I could fit a c&c would be underneath another piece of furniture (no electrical items above) so I wouldn't be able to access it from the top which led me to thinking of some kind of front opening. It wouldn't have to be the full length of the cage. I need a permanent lid because of cats.

So yea, I basically want a fully enclosed 2x4 with 1x2 loft that opens from the front. Not asking for much am I! 😳😫

And yes I do need an architect, or a miracle! 😉🤣

Bear in mind if the maximum size you can have is 2x4 then you will only be able to get two sows.

Having said that, you can make an L shaped cage for more space. Ground floor space is more important than a loft.

I do only have 2 sows and would not get any more pigs until I could adequately house and care for them. I understand the importance of the floor space and that upper levels do not count towards the total space, they are just a bonus 🙂

I apologise if I have come across flippant in any way, I know I make jokes but the welfare of my girls is paramount and I will do my best to give the biggest and most appropriate living space I can.

Generally the 4 sides of a c and c give it stability. Maybe for the front if you had 1 grid then a 2 grid space then 1 grid, it might be stable. Need to consider if you could get in to clean it. Maybe a thread in the housing section might find some people who've done it that way.

No worries @Siikibam 🙂

Yes I will probably start a thread in housing when I have a clearer view in my mind of what I hope to achieve, it's late and I've been googling cages for far too long! Thank you for all your help.
There’s a thread in housing for peoples c&c setup. You can always have a look there and get some ideas.

If would be possible to have a front opening with a lid if I’m picturing what you are meaning correctly. So picture this - three fixed sides, a fixed lid (whether it’s actually fixed or not is irrelevant for the purposes of my mental picture!), you can then simply use cable ties as hinges to enable you to swing front grids open, and using a clip or hook to secure them together when the cage is closed. The lid would be supported on the side grids and you can always put the connectors in for when it is closed for added security. I feel it would be fine like this. It’s actually something I’ve done in the past in my boys shed. Slightly different, but they live in a hutch in my shed but they have grids around to form their playpen. I have the grids two high and my hurdling skills aren’t great, so I formed a door using cable ties as hinges so I can swing the door open and walk in (I don’t have the door in at present as I’ve done a remodel in preparation for the shed being knocked on and replaced). In your case, the issue as mentioned above, would be how you would clean it being side opening and under a table, but also how likely are piggies to just run out if they get used to the door being opened and freedom is just there! My boys know their hutch door opens and they get let out into the shed to play, they are there waiting every morning and as soon as I open the door, they burst out and nothing can stop them!

As I've seen people join 120" or even 100cm cages together by lifting the ends up. And using cable ties, then put a bendy bridge in the middle. I've even seen people who cut a hole in both trays to put a plastic pipe joining the cages.
