Hiya

I posted earlier about introducing a neutured boar to my 3 girls. I am seriously considering this now but have a couple more questions if anyone can help:

my girls are only 18 weeks old - is it easier to introduce a boar now whilst they are still young and not totally settled yet themselves or is it better to wait till they are older?

Also, do I need to find a boar close to their age or will it not matter?

Younger girls accept a boar easier, although things might be rather more lively for the first few seasons, because they are at their most hormonal and vocal right now.

Age does not matter. My Llewelyn is 3 years old and his girls range from 4 years to 8 months old (my "baby" joined the group at ten weeks old; my 4 year old matron has been rehomed in January after her sister died). Before that, he lived very happily with a lady that was 2 1/2 years older than him.

The RSPCA Walsall has some stunning neutered boars depserately looking for a home right now! I really wish I had the space for a second group...

Thanks Wiebke, its Jasper from Walsall that I am seriously thinking of. Thats why I was wondering about whether to do something sooner rather than later and asking about the age difference. I wondered whether he would feel he had been landed in a creche of little kids or just a happy chap with three young girlfriends :-)

Just got to work on my OH now. Only grudgingly agreed to me having the 3 new girls after constant badgering, now got to see if I can sneak in a lad for the group. A bit more difficult to sneak when it has to be proceeded by a home check!

I know, I have lost my heart to Jasper - he has the same mischievous look that my Dizzy had... I would so like to see him go to a member of the forum, so I can at least follow him!

Any boy will think that he has just landed in his favourite wet dream and then some! Remember that girls come into season from 4 weeks onwards - they are well able to live with a neutered boar at that age.

Best of luck! Any birthdays etc. coming up?

Men are easily susceptible to bribes *wink wink* :))
Jasper is a gorgeous little chap!

I've pushed my luck of late though. Managed to get the three new girls after Faith died at Chrismas on the basis that we already had all the stuff. Then went out a bought new toys/beds/cozies/bigger new pet carrier. Then I got the girls and announced that the existing hutch was too small and they really needed a bigger cage so in the process of buying the bits to build a 4x3 grid C&C. Then had to rearrange the whole front room to make room for the C&C. Now it won't fit on the existing sideboard so I am paying my cousin to build a custom stand for it, with big draws built in for their supplies. When that arrives I am going to have to pay for a bulky waste collection to get rid of existing hutch and sideboard to make room (and probably another item of furniture), so OH now has a very nervous disposition whenever I broach a conversation around guinea pigs!

Will wait a week and start easing into the conversation on it. Think I will go for the "the girls will get on better with a boy in the mix" angle.

Can't you try to sell or give away your hutch and sideboard for free on collection? I was amazed what people wanted to collect when we were building our extension and had to get rid of a lot of stuff from the old kitchen and garage.

You may be able to get Jasper for the money you're saving there... ;)
