I know that 48 hours should be left between bathing and either worming or ivermectin, but can anyone help me with regards to Itrafungol Please? I have a sow who has today started a course of Itrafungol, but was already on an ivermectin and bath rotation. Is it still ok to bath her this week, or should I wait until her 2nd week of Itrafungol treatment, when she‘s not having the medication? Thank you for your time.

Hi

The 48 hours interval applies only to any topical (i.e. on the skin) treatments in order to allow each application to be fully absorbed by the skin for utmost effeciency. It takes about two days for ivermectin to be fully absorbed and get to work at full speed.

It is not needed if part of the treatment is oral (as is the case with itrafungol) because there is no clash about the absorption of different products through the skin.
Extra bathing is not needed with itrafungol until the end of the treatment to make sure that no fungal spores sitting loosely in the coar are carried across can cause another outbreak if they fall onto the bedding and are picked up from there. This last bath should coincide with another deep clean of the cage and all contents to ensure that there is no risk of fungal spores lurking somewhere.
Ringworm: Hygiene, Care And Pictures

May I enquire what your guinea pigs are being treated for?

Thank you Wiebke, that’s really helpful, in 2 ways, as i didnt realise the 48 hours only related to topical treatments, rather than oral. The treatment is for ringworm, initially presented as fungal, so treated for both fungal and parasitic, as both are known to visit together. Skin cultures showed that it was actually ringworm, which then began to form the traditional shape. Itrafungol ordered online, so has been delayed. Thank you again

All the best. Please follow the advice in our ringworm guide link; if you do, it has repeatedly shown that it really works. After all these years, we have had time to work out in just how many ways ringworm spores can be transmitted and how to cut off the various transmission routes efficiently.

You can stop with the ivermectin which may temporarily suppress acute ringworm symptoms at the best but will not cure it and does not contribute to getting on top of it. Ivermectin should only be used against parasites.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge x

It is less knowledge than finding all the rocks on the road the hard way and trying to learn from them... The joys of being a piggy owner going back way before the internet and social media when information was very difficult to come by. ;)
