Hey

Just found this site! It's fantastic. Really love the info about the vets.

I know this is probably a common question, but two of my girls have dandruff. :( Pickles has it quite badly: she's a very itchy piggie generally. Amber is also fairly scratchy. They both have dandruff, you can see Pickles' more on her white fur, but Amber you have to pick up and fuss to see properly. They both have quite sensitive skin, they don't like rub fusses anywhere but their faces. In fact they don't like fusses anywhere but around their ears, cheeks and chins. They had mites when I first got them, but I bought some stuff to put on and they went really fast. Amber is shedding like mad at the mo, but she tends to at this time of year. Pickles has the odd clump of fur come out with scabs on the end but nothing really noticeable. I've had a look and neither of them seems to have anything moving in their fur. There's nothing wrong with Furbie, but she gets bathed every month because she has long hair.

They get two handfuls of Cavy Cuisine pellets a day and lots of spring greens, romaine lettuce, cucumber, carrots and celery a day (well a handful each twice a day - they don't think that's enough mind! :) They all eat like mad and jump around and squeak whenever they hear me coming! None of them are really fussy piggies they prefer so can't tell if they have got more sensitive over time.

Any ideas after my rambling!?

Thanks Jo xx

welcome to the forums from me and the girls in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: sorry to hear of amber and pickles, either take them to the vet to get checked out as it mught me mites, lice or fungal, or take pictures of them and send it to christine at gorgeous guineas http://gorgeousguineas.com/index.html and she will recomend something for you. O0 hugs to furbie too O0 hugs and healing vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: welcome again hope you have fun, learn heaps and make many friends O0

Might be fungal.

If you can't see anything moving it's not likely to be lice.

It could still be mites though as anything you buy(from pet shops etc) doesn't usually have the strong enough effect to completely wipe out mites. They need to be given ivermectin by the vets for this.
As they don't have any scabs though I couldn't 100% say it was mites.

If I were you I'd probably take them to the vet for a proper diagnosis. Meanwhile you could take some pics of the dandruff etc and explain your situation to Chrissie at Gorgeous guineas? email [email protected], she sells great natural products for pigs that can sort their skin out O0

Thanks. I think I'll give gorgeous guineas a try as I don't know any vets near me I trust yet!
