My two girls were adopted from pets at home about 3 weeks ago aged about 8 months. They are settling in great and already part of the family. They are kept inside and we did get them checked over by a vet a few weeks ago who was happy they were healthy.

I’ve noticed they itch quite often. Not all the time but a few times an hour. Is this normal or could they have anything? Had a good look at their fur and skin and nothing looks strange. No bald patches and skin looks fine. They did need some fur shaved off at Pets at home as they were in an awful state with matted hair. I am wondering if it is their fur growing back in which is a bit itchy.

My husband thinks they are just grooming themselves but I am a bit paranoid so just wanted to check. Will obviously take them in to be checked if it gets any worse. Or if we see anything strange.

As long as skin clear, no bald patches or dandruff just sounds like normal piggy behaviour, keep an eye and any issues visit a vet for a check

Keep an eye on it, but also consider whether your radiator heated indoors air could be too dry.

We do have the heating on quite a lot living up in Scotland it is already cold for the winter. I never thought this could affect them. Is there anything we could do to help with this? Would a humidifier help?

I second that, I’m in Scotland and it’s freezing basically all the time, my piggies are indoors so aren’t really affected by the cold weather

A humidifier may help, try and see first whether it makes a difference when you place a steaming bowl of water close by the cage first. ;)

i love that you posted this :) i had the same question running through my mind as i've noticed the same thing :) and i to can over worry about things like this, so its nice to come across a post that has my question already answered :)

I agree. Best to keep an eye on the situation. If you notice any broken hairs, broken skin or red or dry skin then get them to the vets for investigation.
