Hello,
I’m in need of a bit of advice.

I have three guinea pigs, two of which are roughly 2.5 years old, the other is under a year old. While most of their droppings are perfectly fine, I’ve been noticing clumpy and tear-shaped stools mixed in with the normal ones.
All three piggies seem fine in themselves - they all eat plenty of hay, drink enough water and their weights are good/consistent. They live on a fleece bedding that is spot cleaned daily and a full clean out twice a week, so I notice any changes. As I said they all seem fine, but as we all know piggies are prey animals so they’re experts at hiding health issues. Is this something worth bringing up to our exotics vet about? Or should I just keep an eye on it for the time being?

have you added anything different to their daily diet?

I have changed their hay to find one they liked best, and added a calcium c powder to their nuggets as the vet said it works better than the calcium drops I was putting in the water bottle. But they have the same sort of vegetables daily and nuggets have remained the same.

It could be the change of hay, mine kinda did the same thing , even if I give them a different veg item it makes them a bit mushier than normal

I can't answer about the poop, just wondering what the vet's thinking was behind supplementing calcium?

Sorry I meant vitamin powder, not calcium! I was originally putting vitamin c drops in their bottle but the vet said that it breaks down in water, making it less effective over time. So she suggested a powder supplement on their nuggets instead. I only use a minimal amount as we tend to give them green vegetables like kale, parsley etc.

I know they can’t produce their own vitamin c but it’s in vegetables etc

If their getting it through veggies then they don’t really need it adding by another source

My Percy had soft poops for months at the end of last year. I’d stop the veg for a few days and things would improve. Slowly start the veg again and soft poops would start again. The thing that helped Percy was stalkier hay. He was on soft Timothy hay and now he has a mixture of soft and stalky Timothy hay.

I might give the mixture of hay a try, just ease them onto it. Thanks!

It might actually just be one of the pigs that has a little problem. If they all live together it can be quite tricky to tell - though not impossible. You just have to be a bit of a poop detective!
