Woody has been on isathal drops 3x daily for 5 days as per the vets recommendation for a small ulcer on his eye. His eye is getting better but he is still blinking and closing his eye a little. As it is a bank holiday my vets is closed so I cannot ring r.e. extending the dose for a few extra days, will it do any damage to stop for today and start again tomorrow if the vet suggests? They have a 24 hour emergency line I could call but I'm not sure this is considered an emergency!

I can’t recommend as I’m not a vet or a particularly experienced guinea pig owner, but my pig has recently been on the same thing (but for conjunctivitis) and has been put on x2 daily for 7 days. I can’t imagine it’ll do any harm but would be best to call and check.

Thank you! I have just called the emergency line (luckily my vets is 24 hours so they can access his records) and they said its fine to continue for the extra 2 days, made the call very quick as I didn't want to clog up their lines! If it hasn't fully healed by then it's back for another trip 😂😬

Hope the eye does heal soon.
When my Micah had haypoke it took a bit longer to heal, nearly 2 weeks, so don’t worry just yet.

Some haypokes do take longer than others to heal, so it’s a good idea to continue with the drops. My vets always arrange a follow up appointment as it’s almost impossible to see if it’s healed with the naked eye - the vets use fluorescent dye and a UV light to check. I would ask your vets for a re-check of the eye to be sure in any event.

Thank you! Yes I will as the vet nurse I spoke to mentioned a follow up 😊

The isathal is to prevent infection but if the eye needs extra help healing the vet may prescribe Remend corneal repair gel to be used, at a different time of day to the isathal- or if the eye is just dry and irritated, a lubricant eye gel like lubrithal too.
A persistent or nasty eye injury, or one made worse by piggy scratching it or a companion licking it, may need all 3 types of eyedrops to sort it out properly!
Well worth a follow up vet appointment, or even a weekly follow up for 3 or 4 weeks, until it is fully healed.

Hi
If symptoms have not fully gone, please continue for now with the medicated eye drops until you can contact your vet during regular hours and get an appointment then. Eye treatment can sometimes last longer. I have had to give the trops for over two weeks in more severe cases, so they are safe to use.

Just to update this thread! I took woody to the vets today as I wasn't sure his eye had fully healed still and the vet gave him the all clear. He still has a tiny dot on his eye where the small ulcer was but this will go away on its own so no more eye drops for woody and a tonne of embarrassment over bringing him in yet again for me!

To be honest, better safe than sorry - you don't have the experience and the dye to check whether the eye is fully healed because of the still visible patch on the cornea. Any vet would rather see an owner making sure than having to deal with the complications from a not properly healed out injury.

But glad that it is fully healed out. Sometimes the opaque patch can hang around a while and with more serious injuries may never fade, as was the case with a couple of piggies I adopted.

Yes he was more than happy to re examine amd i wouldnt want to leave it and make it potentially worse, he didn't charge me for the consult either! Woody is in a mini strop about going once again so quickly but if it means he gets a good check up I can survive his wrath 🤣🤣
