Is topical polysporin safe for guinea pigs?

Just a quick question... is polysporin topical antibiotic (polymixin B sulfate and gramicidin) safe topically for guinea pigs? A vet recently told me no, but I seem to recall a different vet years ago encouraging me to use it as needed on a surgical wound if it got dry or irritated? So just for future reference, yay or nay?
