Hi everyone!

I'm brand new to this forum and am looking at getting a pair of piggies very soon.

I have a cabinet which I COULD use to put a C&C cage on top of, but I'd like to get your opinions on whether the space would be big enough for two pigs.

The measurements are: 1.28m in length and 50cm in width. I would also get a big exercise pen which I would use daily with them.

If this space is not large enough, I will NOT use it. I'm only asking because it would be a very suitable place to put the cage.

Look forward to your replies,

TIA James

My bare minimum size for a pair of piggies is 7.5 square feet of space... I think you'll be fine with ample play time :)

Welcome to the Forum.
:wel:

It is always lovely to meet someone who is doing their research before they get their piggies.
A good place to start with cage size is here:

Cage Size Guide

The minimum recommendation for 2 guinea pigs is 120 cm x 60 cm, so depending on the type of cage you get, with a small overhang then the cabinet space could work.

Hi and welcome!

Great that you are doing your research beforehand.

The minimum space welfare recommendation for two guinea pigs is either a traditional cage of 60x120 cm (2x4 ft) or a 2x3 grid C&C cage, which is about 75x115 cm with connectors. Ideally you go for a 2x4 grid C&C cage for two guinea pigs; that takes up 75x150 cm. Guinea pigs are ground roaming animals, so they really do well with a cage as large as you can afford; you will in turn enjoy their antics and happiness! Your chest will in any case be too small for a C&C cage.

Are you on the North Island? In that case, I would strongly recommend that you get your guinea pig from Auckland Cavy Care rescue. They only rehome stably paired neutered and spayed sows that are used to human interaction, so you can neatly avoid all the usual problems that await the unwary owners and start with guinea pigs that are used to humans and cuddling straight away. You also do not have to worry about any nasties coming with your piggies. That is well worth the extra effort!
Babies are cute, but they stay babies only for a very few weeks. By the time you have socialised them (as shop and for sale breeder piggies do not get anything in the way of friendly human interaction), they are no longer quite as little...
If you want instant snuggles, plumping for older piggies is much more satisfying as you can skip the wiggly and sudden jumps phase. With boars, you do not have to worry about fights during the teenage months and with sows you are guaranteed that they are not pregnant. Or you can look for one of each - Auckland has got them all! ;)
I can recommend them most warmly as the best and safest place by far to get guinea pigs from in your country!

Hi they pee & poo in the litter tray then eat the hay. YUK but they like it. I find that an upstairs floor takes up too much room, because you have the ladder. Your ladder is to steep by the way. If a piggy can jump up to something they can get down, they may be up there for ages because they like it. Lol.
The cardboard tubes you have, they Toliet on them & make a mess of them. If you cut about a quarter out you'll find they don't soil it. When you have an upper floor you find the ladder takes up to much room downstairs. Sorry but yours is to steep that's why they won't go up. Also if you stick a bit of carpet on it, it gives them something to grip.
I have never heard of any piggie not liking fleece.
Sorry but the cage is to small, you need to upgrade asap.
Sorry I'm not nagging just a few tips.
Enjoy being a piggy slave, love your piggies cute alert!

Just read about your sideboard what you can do is put a bit of wood that overhangs the length so you can make a bigger cage. If you overhang more than 8-12 inches you might have to put legs on so it's stable. If it's wider you can put the sideboard in the middle. Or add legs to the front.

Hello and welcome. Can't add to what's been said above. Can't wait to see photos when you get your piggies.
