Hi there

My guinea pig Maisie has to have an abscess removed from her right cheek. I’ve been quoted around £250 if it’s something that can be drained or £429 if it’s mass that needs to be fully removed.

Do these prices sound correct? Also is it best to go to an exotic vet who specialists in guinea pigs?

I will pay whatever I have to but I’m not sure if this is the average price and don’t know if I should look elsewhere before saying yes.

Also , has anyone had a guinea pig who has successfully had an abscess removed? I love her so much and want her to be ok ❤️

Jemimah had an abscess removed from her rump. It was very successful but that was a few years ago.
I can’t remember the cost.
I know @Betsy had a piggy with a huge abscess that was successfully removed.

If it helps I’ve been paying close to that for a couple of x-rays for Phoebe.

Vet bills are expensive for piggies.

I’m sure someone will come along who has had an experience more like yours.
I think @furryfriends (TEAS) may be able to help.
Debbie is very experienced with dental piggies and abscesses

The price you have been quoted looks around the same as we pay here.
Peanut had an abcess removed from his neck a few years ago I think it was about £250. Nugget has just had a grease gland tumour removed this was £426. The price will depend on the vets and how long the operation takes, follow up treatment etc. We go to an exotic vet but as long as the vet is experienced in guinea pig surgery it's not necessary to go to an exotic one.

Yes my RB Piggy Christian did have a HUGE abdominal abscess removed in June of 2018. He went on to live another two and a half years. This is the size of his abscess.

I can't remember how much the operation was.

Similar to others it's been a few years since I had a piggy have an abscess removed. I remember the quote being less that what you have been quoted but when I took him in they didn't proceed with the operation because it was nestled between two blood vessels so I had to go to the exotics specialist and there is always a premium price going there.

To answer your other question, being an exotics vet isn't important. Having excellent knowledge with guinea pigs, but even more importantly having excellent experience with guinea pigs, is what will make the difference. If you do end up seeking quotes from other vets I would look at our vet locator tool to try and find some with piggy experience. General vets can be quite a bit cheaper but the less experience they have with piggies the lower the success rate and the higher the risk. That applies to exotics vets too, just because they are exotics doesn't mean they have experience with piggies

Hello everyone. Just an update on Maisie. We had the lump removed and it looked like your pic @Betsy.

The only issue we have now is that the area is filling up into another lump, but this time it’s blood. This was drained out on Monday but it seems to come back again slowly over the next week or so. She’s eating normally and is her normal self and has put all her weight back on that she lost post op.

The vet said she may need to go under again to see if a blood vessel issue if it keeps filling up. I don’t want her to suffer if it can be left alone. Has anyone ever had a similar issue?
