one of my girls tries to mount the other one. I'm worried that she isn't a girl and is actually a boy. I got them from an experinced owner so i very much doubt she would have made a mistake with sexing them.
I tried to have a look yesterday but couldn't hold her still enough to determine whether they were girls or boy parts.
They are about 3/4 months old now, if one of them was a boy would there have been babies by now?
Is the mounting normal for 2 girls?

I noticed this happening with my 2 girls, they are 2 years old though.

I posted on here for some advise as I wasn't sure why they would be doing this and because I know they are definitely girls.

It seems that when a sow is in season this can happen and it may also be a dominance thing and is quite normal behaviour.

Someone with a lot more knowledge will reply I'm sure, but if they are definitely both girls, the mounting could be for the reasons above.

Good Luck :)

I'm almost 100% sure they are both girls as i really can't see the woman i got them from making a mistake.
Will keep an eye on them though just to make sure! :)

If the one female is showing continuing signs of this behaviour, you should bring her to a vet as it can also be caused by ovarian cysts. We went through that with one of our pigs and needed to have her neutered.

There are two other symptoms to watch for in the case of cysts.

1) Hair loss near the rear legs
2) Long and hard nipples

If you see either of these symptoms, please take your piggy to see a doctor. These both occur due to the hormone imbalance from the ovaries. Both of these symptoms will clear up fairly quickly after surgery.

Your girl is simply in season - the big hormones often hit the girls as well at that age, although it doesn't lead to fall-outs like with boys.

Things should get back to normal by tomorrow - a season only lasts about a day every 15-17 days.

Totally agree, she's in season. Fudge does this to Cuddles every 15 days or so, I've even seen Cuddles starting to bum sniff today so she may get her own back...

I agree that it's just a dominance thing. I have a female that often mounts her male companion, especially when there are unfamiliar guinea pigs within smelling distance. She'll mount him from any direction, she also rumblestruts at him and wiggles her back end. She is definitely a girl but I don't think she's too sure herself :)
