Hello everyone!

I just wondered what you thought of this hutch:
http://www.bitsforpets.com/product_info.php?products_id=8

Do you think it's big enough for four guinea pigs? (2 in bottom, 2 in top.)

I have a 2 metre by 2 foot run that they go in during the day time, although they have alternate days as I have two boys and two girls!
So when the boys are in it, the girls go inside the top part of an indoor cage, and I move them about every hour to get as much grass as possible!

Has anybody had this hutch before? Any reviews?
And also, is the mesh that is used okay? At the moment I have chicken wire on my hutches, but they're getting a bit tatty!

Oh, last question, do you think it's weatherproof? I live in England, so it has to be okay in rain! :))

Thanks!

Ellis :)

Looks great that hutch.

Yes, I think it's sufficient for two guinea pigs in each level as you also have a run that you use for them.

The design looks waterproof from the top. If you are worried you could always use a tarpoline to cover it when it rains heavily. The only thing is when the rain comes at an angle the inside will get wet, but that's with any hutch without being undercover!

One thing I would change and that is the closing part of the hutches, the current heartshape version is just not secure enough. It's secure for the piggies inside but predators can get access to them easily by "rattling the cage". Our neighbour has that version in single and had some cats get into them and a very "Houdhini" like Bunny get out of it!

I have just bought something similar from www.thepetpads.co.uk (Heritage) Glad of the advice about heart shaped locks. Very sturdy. Bags of room. 15 - 20 minutes assembly time? Hmmm? Really, it wasn't hard but definitely needs two people as it is so big. We managed 45 minutes. After the 10 carrying it (very heavy) through the house, and another 15 opening it up and laying out the bits. The Heritage though states that you can keep your piggies separate, two up and two down, but ours came with a ramp, so our two new baby boys are having the whole lot, lucky them, and I have been given another hutch for my two new baby girls. Rain has not touched our hutch as they are sheltered under a sort of dormer overhang. x

Ooh, I think I've just changed my mind on which hutch to get!
PMing you with a few questions about your new hutch Nutmeg!

That hutch looks fantastic nutmeg - would love something like that for Ginger and Iggy. Can it be used as two separate hutches though or is there a hole in the floor of the top hutch for the ramp?/ Also what does it mean about plastic removeable floors?

boys are missing there mummy and daddy

hello jane how are you the hutch is looking great! boys went out in the garden at my mums yesterday they loved it, they really seemed to enjoy your company x

Nemo, it can be used as two separate ones if you leave out the ramp and just buy another piece of wood for the upper floor to replace the one with a hole in where the ramp comes up. There are two pieces of flooring for upstairs one in the bedroom and one in the bit behind the wire part. They are easily removable and I guess it would be easy to do. The ramp though is really good, layered, and covered in the same felt as the roof, so my piggies won't slide, good grip. So the floors just sit in on the built in ledges. Very easy. The floors are made of wood about an inch thick covered in a stapled down layer of solid black plastic so they would easily lift out and clean. Very impressed with the quality. Jane xx

Aw thanks for explaining.:) I need a hutch to house two piggies but they are male and female so need to be kept separately because I am not neutering the male. I thought on the picture it came as two separate hutches. I suppose it would be easy to put a bit of wood in to block the hole where the ramp goes in though although ideally I would just like a double hutch with no holes in for ramps but can't seem to find one.:(

The hutch I asked about at the top is a double decker seperate.
It looks a bit of a nightmare to clean though, as the top left door doesn't open, so you have to do the top by opening the roof, and the bottom left door is tiny. Grrr!

Yes I agree that does look a bit of a nightmare to clean out doesn't it - wonder why they didn't make it so you could open the top door.?/ Did you find a hutch that suited you?

Back to the heart shaped latches, can anyone tell me if they have a good method of adding extra security. Extra locks? Thanks, don't want my piggies falling out or anything getting to them, even though we are very secure. x
