We are building a new hutch for our guinea pigs. It is not quite finished yet, but would like to get an idea of what you guinea pig experts think!:)

Here is a picture of the current hutch, it's 4ft x 2ft and I personally feel its too small

These are some pictures of our new hutch in the making, it is/will be 5ft x 2ft 2 storey

And here is a picture of them against each other, what a difference!:)

I would like to know how many piggies I should keep in there. I was thinking 3
I have posted a few threads some say only to judge with one level, so 2 piggies and others say 4 piggies :)

Sorry about the order of the pics. My dad kept taking it apart to add bits on!

looks very good :) i would say 3 personally :) do you have boys or girls? sorry if i've missed it somewhere.

i like dads hutch making skills!

i would be tempted to try and find a neutered male to make a trio.

i agree, adding a neutered male would be best. sometimes i think pairs can be territorial with adding just 1 extra new pig if its same sex, and i feel 4 would be over doing it in this hutch. a neutered male added to your pair of sows sounds like your best bet :)

wow that is an amazing difference in hutch size, i agree with the other guys that 3 should be the right amount, well done for building the hutch xx

Size-wise you could get more piggies in there but I think 3 would be a great little group. They'd have so much space and it would be easier to bond a neutered boar with your girls without too much trouble.

The hutch is AMAZING! They are going to be very happy piggies! :)

Hmm... Without being rude, it probably was 'small' because you had too much stuff in it. You seem to have a decent sized area to fit a run, unless you do have one on grass out of shot, but a 4ft X 2ft hutch for two pigs is plenty big enough with a few hours out-of-cage time. My 4 girls live in a hutch the same size and have it basically for sleeping in and having their dinner in. They have about 5/6 hours in their run most days :)

Of course, the upgrade will be appreciated but be careful the ladder isn't going to be too steep. They have heavily built bodies and delicate backs so need low environments to move around in. It is a lovely hutch he's made for them though :)

I'm not 100% 'for' neutering guinea-pigs, I see no point in it, but if that's the path you choose, please only adopt a boar who has been neutered already. Don't risk it with one you've bought yourself as you'd have bonded with them before the operation, and it could end in tragedy for you both.

What a wonderful Dad you have! Hutch is looking great, can't wait to see the new run too.:)

Looks fantastic - my Dad (RIP) always built hutches etc. for our furries as kids and like yours, kept changing things (perfectionist :)))
My OH is a builder and built our C&C set up in the lounge which currently houses 9 (and another baby coming to join us this evening =10 x))
Love seeing set ups hand made and the final results :(|)
