Hi I'm looking for some advice while I try to get a vet appointment ( we live in rural area we only have 1 vet that deals with small animals all rest are farm animals and they currently have waiting list) I started noticing 3 days ago that he had lost hair on his belly but no sores are anything on it but then he was scratching at his neck and he has bald patches and small red spot. He Had lost some weight but his partner is very big so she has been taking his food. So we are currently feeding him extra separate from her. Am I right in thinking this is a fungel infection? I will attach pictures. Thanks

Hi, I am very sorry that vet access is difficult for you. I do hope you can get him an appointment.

Loss of fur / scratching and sores can be fungal, mites or something completely different I’m afraid only a vet can diagnose and prescribe the correct treatment.

Please don’t be tempted to home treat as you could make the problem worse and pet shop products aren’t strong enough

Thanks for the reply it's a nightmare here so many of our vets have shut. I tried to attach photos but couldn't find an option

I am very sorry 😞 now your account is up and running, you should be able to post photos. To do this, go to the ‘attach files’ button in the left hand corner. It’s a green box and has a paper clip in

Thanks. Also just to note his partner who's a female has no hair loss or anything.

Hi and welcome

We cannot tell you whether you are dealing with a fungal infection, a skin parasite or something else. The hair loss is not characteristic.
There are fungal skin infections beyond ringworm that can affect guinea pigs but this needs to be really seen by a vet.

Please do not treat on spec. Fungal and parasites require different treatments. Any treatment on your own will unfortunately wipe out pointers for the vet; it is like wiping a crime scene and leaving the vet-detective without any clues and in some cases delaying treatment as your vet has to wait until any products you have used have worn off.

I fully appreciate your difficult situation but you can make things easily worse rather than better if you step in with the wrong thing and on too low a level; including fatal outcomes at the very worst. Please book an appointment at the soonest.
