Is this cage suitable for 2 Guinea Pigs?

I think the ramp looks a little steep on that, sometimes you find that they only use the one level not always of course but sometimes.
How about a bigger single story one the other one on there looks ok the primrose, or you can get some single 5ft or 6ft ones from other places.
Is it going outside or in a shed?

Scrub that about the primrose the reviews are not very good.

I have had one of these before and I wouldn't say it was big enough for a pair of guineas. The ramp takes away most of the upper floor and in my experience there's not many guineas that like using a ramp that steep.

I think you would be better getting a much larger single storey hutch. If you wanted to try one of those hutches, buy one from ebay but I don't think you'll be that happy with it once you've got it - it really doesn't give them much space at all.

Thanks fr the link Flips. :))

Yeh have been on zooplus before - wasnt to impresed to be honest. Have been put off co alot of my friends had cages arrive damaged or with bits missing. I like to steer clear off buying offline unless needed to be honest. Have had some bad luck buying online pet stuff lol... But will keep looking. Have seen this cage in person a while back in P@H and quite like it myself. But dont wanna get it unless its suitable.

Thanks tho am still looking at all sorts of sites anyway - to find " the right hutch" :D

thanks for that - will certianly concider it. But as you say i do like to see them in person preferably - Fussy i know mallethead :P

Am just browsing ebay atm and following a few hutches. But its such a big decision. I remeber buying the sheds for my rabbits It took me ages to find the right ones :P I'm so fussy at times ( But in a good way i hope :P ) he he

Thanks for all the help :)

Orchard Manor is a good size, but poorer quality for the price. I know some bunny owners with it, who say if its outside the wood rots very quickly, and the back and base have actually peeled as it is such thin wood. It's also not fox proof. So personally I wouldn't buy it.

Do they still have the Lavender Lodge in Pets at Home? It's a great size and great quality. I bought mine on January off the P@H website, its fab! However I don't see it on their website anymore...its 5ft 3inches.

Mine have pretty similar hutches to that, and it's fine, they actually love the ramp now, just took a couple of weeks to get used to it. But they'd need a run aswell, either attached to the hutch or that they can be put into during the day time. The hutch on its own is not really big enough for two pigs, but it's ok for night and days when the weather is awful.

Here's the hutches I have.

And I also have a run on the grass that's 4' X 3.5', but I'm ordering these runs any day now, they attach to the front of the hutches, and I'll have them on concrete, so the pigs will have loads of room :)

And, if more that getting an hutch is an option, check out the thread on here about C&C cages! They are VERY inexpensive and typically provide your pig with lots of room to roam, more so than most hutches or cages. You can also add a top to the cage as well if you want it more enclosed for safety reasons.

Check out:

www.guineapigcages.com for more information on the C&C cages I was referring to :) (Or, just give the page a look if you're bored... pretty cool cages there!)

happysaz133 - Ok thanks for that. Dont know how i worked it out to be just over 4ft lol. Oh well. I do love the design.... but yeh- supose it could be quite steap... i will keep looking i guess...lol.

Thank you

And GPD - yeh i would love a C&C cage- But my guineas will be living outside- so not practical. Thanks tho - am so jelouse- would love a c&c cage one day - maybe when i have my own place (one day :P)

:))

I was thinking of this seller rather than zooplus
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GIANT-6ft-Sin...all_Animals&hash=item4ce9a7a4c8#ht_3604wt_947

However, I can understand you being wary of buying online. I like to see things in person too, especially if they cost quite a bit of money.

The minimum size for 2 guinea pigs is 4ft x 2 ft or 122cm x 61cm, so the pets at home hutch is big enough. :)

I remember the stress I had when I was looking for a hutch for my girls. I settled on this one and from that seller as well.

The quality is fantastic and much cheaper and sturdier than the hutches from P@H.

Good luck with which ever hutch you decide :)

But it's the same depth as width right? And has two levels, so that's pretty big. 3ft wide and deep, so 9 square feet, and two levels. I bet they'll use the ramp, mine have no problem with it. Though I think maybe you can get better hutches for the price.

Hi, only just seen this thread.

I have to say that when I adopted my two piggies last October, come the December, I bought a cage from Pets at Home. I didn't however, anticipate whether or not they would manage the little stairs........

Since then, I still have Maisy, but Daisy passed away last month, but we do have a new friend for Maisy called Dotty, 16 weeks old.

I haven't used the hutch yet, but my hubby has fixed it altogether, ready for the warmer weather (hopefully, not too long now).

Not sure if ours is the same size as the Sherwood though. I haven't read the reviews, as I purchased it before researching, so I hope they get on fine with it when ready.

I would have said that the Sherwood was adequate. I hope mine utilize the top floor, if they don't, it will be a shame, but I've got it now.

Here it is:

hya,
my ladders in my cage are about that steep, i think they would be okay, as my piggies know what there doing, and they take there time when coming down. my outside hutch has a bit of wood up the sides incase they fall, so do that if you feel uneasy. Also-p.s i saw that hutch the weekend- and its lovely-I'm jealous!haha. gemx

I noticed that most of the hutches at p@h now have wood up the sides of the ramps to make the piggies / rabbits more secure :)

YES, that's true. The primrose that we have, has an edge along the side and little ridges going up so that they don't slip. Another Idea I had, was to 'cut to fit' some floor tile (if it's suitable) and lay that on the ladder/rise, so that they definately would not slip then.

I do hope you decide on a suitable hutch soon though. :)

Hi, I totally understand you wanting to find the 'right hutch'
I really like the orchard one you showed us on the first page. It looked lovely. I too, like to either a) see the hutch in real life or b) see the hutch with the pet in it and the required accessories (food bowls etc) and even a few droppings!
I know b) sounded weird but I think it's more accurate to see how the pet looks in size comparisen to the hutch and also how much room accessories take up. I don't know about the droppings though, it just makes it look more at home and lived in to me. Like it has a good use (but they'd never show those on a photo trying to tell the hutch unless it was second hand!)

Something I suggest is getting a smaller hutch that is still good quality and then getting a puppy play pen and setting it up around the hutch. Get one with a cover or top so it has some weather protection. They can look quite nice, especially if you get the ones where you can set it up so it's a rectangle around it. It makes a nice play area and good access to grass. It's not always the neatest option but it can be nice. OR getting an old hutch and redeisgning it. That's if you're handy with tools. even just one that's perfectly functional but could do with a touch up. It's not hard and you can paint the outside (where they can't get to) and make it look gorgeously homely. With my first guinea pigs we had an old wooden dolls house that was converted into a guinea pig hutch. We put wire over the windows and extended it out and the house became their warm part. it was just a basic doll house with two floors and no rooms but it worked a charm! we did have to protect it against weather though.

Hope I helped a bit. My ideas were a bit alternative and not as easy as just buying one but I just like to look at all the options!

Hi Guys, I have decided to get a playhouse /shed for my guinea pigs - But wanna save up so i can afford to get the best one possible and get the materials etc to build it etc. So have decided to get the shed in July/ August.
But as my piggys are comming to live with me in in a few weeks - I'm gonna get a hutch this week and build it etc ...
My question is : Is this hutch suitable for a temporary 2/3 month situation?

http://www.petsathome.com/shop/double-tier-rabbit-hutch-and-accessory-kit-32751

I have seen it in store last week and liked it - just wanna make sure its ok...

Wanna go and buy it tommorow or monday if so....

I would say that that hutch would be more than suitable for 2 piggies :) The only thing I find with p@h hutches is that they can be a bit flimsy but that is my personnel opinion. Size wise, it is perfect.

i have 2 of p@h primrose cottage hutches with hugger and snuggle. 1 for my piggies so they have both floors and the other my bunnies live in seperate atm until i have my female neutered/spayed (never know which is which) my piggies do use the ramp but prefer to stay upstairs
