Hi everyone,
Today my guinea pigs where in the play pen and looking at inside I seen a pile of urine which appears to be red. I am aware that urine can change coulour when oxygen get to it, but I am panicking. I have a heard of it is blood how am I supposed to tell who’s urine it is. I have attached a picture. 😥

That does look very red rather than the dark orange of oxidation. But it also looks a bit beetroot-y? If they've eaten a decent amount of purple food they can do purple pee which can alarm. But if you've not feed them any beets, beet leaf or similar you should get it checked out by the vet.

Get a little bit of white toilet tissue and press it against each piggie's bits to see if you can catch any drips... you might be able to see who has produced this. Other than that it's just keeping an eye on them to see who does it again. Also see if anypig looks wet round the bits as if they're dripping pee, or see if one is hunching in pain or squeaking as they pee. These are other indicators of urinary tract problems.

Hi

This looks like a classic porphyrine (and not blood) coloured pee with a little calcium mixed in that is typical for the onset of a cystitits (bacterial or sterile, i.e. not reacting to an antibiotic) or a bacterial urinary tract infection. The urine may or may not test positive for blood at this stage but not to the extent the colour of the urine suggests.

You should over the coming week see symptoms (like squeaking when peeing or pooing and increased urination or stale smelling urine etc.) gradually show up and become more persistent and easier to diagnose. Right at the start, red pees can be followed by clear pees (which both may or may not contain blood) and symptoms can be very off and on.

I would recommend that you book a vet appointment sometime next week during regular opening hours but not in the next two days in order to make a diagnosis easier with symptoms (like blood and infection markers in the urine present in every pee) clearly visible, unless your piggy should suddenly look very off (which I frankly do not expect).

I hope that this helps you?

PS: It would really help us if you please added your country to location in the account details, which you access by clicking on your username on the top bar. This will appear with every post you make and allow us to support you best and quickest with the information that is really relevant for your country over the coming days as medication brand names vary quite a lot of from country to country.

This is what blood in urine looks like. You can imagine that when I saw this we rushed straight off to the vet. Sadly it meant euthanasia for the piggy as he had already had two bladder ops and the third stone (causing this bleeding) was stuck to his bladder wall.
I hope you can find someone to help get your piggy sorted out x
