So been giving my boy a through brush as I dont think he's been given one for quite some time before we got him and noticed there were some knotty parts towards his back. On further inspection I discovered a mucky bald patch just above his bottom. As he's nearly 6 is this just a symptom of old age and hair loss and just needs a bathe or is it a sign of a problem?

Its his grease gland. If it is dirty then he may need to be cleaned. The guide below will help

Yes that’s his grease gland. You can bathe it with a bit of coconut oil
