New Born Pup
Winns is 5 years old
She was a rescue during Covid. She was quickly labeled a stone pig after having bloody urine and calcium crystals in her urine an ultrasound was done and she had no stones. From that time on, she has been on a strict diet low calcium. We have had a few UTIs over the years that were treated in the last 2 months she has had very pink urine going to dark brownish urine or orange . She’s peeing so much. There could be 10 guinea pigs in there.
After a few days when it started, I was checking her over and pure red blood was coming out of her bottom
This started on a Friday and I was not able to get her to the vet until Monday there was only one episode of the bright red blood I cleaned her up and she never had the bright red bleeding again when I took her to the vet I told her about the urine situation that it had just started that she had not been eating or acting like her usual self She had lost 1/4 of her wt in 5 days No diarrhea but by Monday 3 days after the bloody episode her wt was almost back to normal she was eating acting normal and her urine was yellow
She had an ultrasound an x-ray and a urine test Dr said there were no stones and her urine test did not show show infection. She was not going to give her antibiotics, but I insisted that she give me antibiotics to have on hand because I really felt like this was too good to be true We don’t have many vets in the Atlanta area who see small animals Guinea pigs are considered an exotic.
I had to travel over an hour and a half across town to get her seen and my vet bill was over $350
I’m on a fixed income and that was my grocery money. Maybe I’m wrong but that seems like a very expensive amount to have her checked out. I’ve been to this vet before and it’s not been this expensive. I don’t know what the deal is.
A exam with an ultrasound has only been $80 at that vet prior visits plus antibiotics
But they charged me $250 for an x-ray and a urine test which ended up being totally unnecessary as She did not have a stone.
She is a silky, absynian mix. My understanding is that her life expectancy is on the low end for her breed at five years so when I discussed it with the vet, I told her if there is a stone. I’m not going to put her through surgery at her age one I don’t think it’s fair to her, and Two I can’t afford it.
I guess I was taken advantage of being so worried over her that when she pushed for both the x-ray and the urine test I folded
I should’ve said no and I didn’t
In the end She told me she felt like she had maybe passed a stone that’s why she had the bleeding and that’s why she got better. I went home and 1 week later her discolored urine symptoms returned starting off clearly blood tinged then going to orangeish brown in copious amounts
However she was acting totally normal eating drinking no diarrhea happy and active.
She’s been on the antibiotics for about a week now she’s on Benebac ( also not provided by the vet another 17 dollars) and I’m making sure she gets her vitamin C supplement still no diarrhea or anything GI
Problems
Today she got her grooming, her nails cut her ears cleaned and a major haircut around her bottom She has very long gorgeous hair and I basically had to chop off a lot more than I usually do from the waist down because of staining and her staying wet from peeing so much and sitting in it overnight, I started having to clean her cage 2 times a day to keep her dry. I sew her bedding and she also has white paper shavings, which I’ve always used. So I would be able to detect any issues with her urine, potential stones, UTI etc..
Her cage is always super clean and dry
That’s the story on that issue now we have a new issue tonight. Wish she was getting her bath. She was pooping in the water as usual and I didn’t think anything about it. I just scooped it out as we went along like I usually do.
After she was dry and put back to bed, I went to clean up her bathing area and I found about a 3 inch slimy segmented when it appears to be a worm coming out of her poop I can’t swear to it, but I think I saw it curl up like up in the middle But now it seems to be dead so my question is it a tapeworm ? Do I need to go back and spend another $400 to get it treated ?
Is this the cause of all the problems we’re having I’m just very confused and would appreciate any or advice offered
I’m older and not computer savvy if I can figure out how to send a picture from my phone or if someone could tell me how to I’ll send one and you can see what it looks like and tell me what you think
