Hey there, one of my boars had unexplained bloat a couple months ago and then also developed a UTI. He was completely cleared for stones after an X-ray and they expressed his bladder and said everything looked great so I thought that would be it.

He responded to medication, but his meds just ended and I noticed he’s started to be in a bit more pain again, but his weight and eating habits are normal.

Today I found this in this in their enclosure while cleaning and I’m afraid it’s possibly a stone? If it is how did they miss this on the X-ray? I spent over 1000$ getting these tests done at the emergency vet because of the vet shortage in America right now. I feel really upset that they might have missed this 🥲.

Hi!

It could be a bladder stone (not having hands-on access, I can't really say) but that said, it looks unusually large for a naturally passed stone, especially in a boar. I would rather expect to see some blood on it with that size and kind of texture as getting it through the narrow urethra must have been excruciating. Boars have an akward inglenook in their urethra where stones usually fetch up.

It may be something else although I haven't got the first clue what it could be.

The problem with x-rays that they are not always quite as conclusive; your vet may be able to feel a stone in the bladder but not necessarily in the urethra.
One of my own boys was booked in for the bladder stone op at an experienced operating vet in another town after an x-ray at my local vet's showed a stone of a comparable size in the bladder area only to be found not to have anything in the pre-op x-ray... The 'stone' turned out to be simply a blob.

I’m gonna get him an appointment with my regular vet tomorrow when they open and hopefully they can give me answers. This whole experience has been extremely stressful for him (and me) and I’m hoping he can fully recover soon. There is no sign of blood, urine looks good so hoping it was just some random thing that got in the cage but I’ll put it in a baggy to have the vet take a closer look just in case. I freaked out when I found it and it looks a bit different from the pictures I saw online so hopefully it’s just a false alarm.
