Is the smell of Moth balls dangerous? Or just annoying to piggies?

Ok- so I need some advice. I’m in the USA and for the last week or so we have had a FOUL smell invade the house every time the heater has come on (& it’s worse at night) and it’s been 20-35* F (-6 to 2* C) outside 24/7 so it’s been running a lot.

We had the HVAC guy come out today and he has told us that we have had a skunk burrow under our house and is spending the nights sleeping up near the heater intake area, which is why our house is overwhelmingly stinking of rotting wet trash that someone is trying to burn (it’s seriously foul smelling and there isn’t anything we can do to fix it but get rid of the skunk). 🙀

He recommended that we take “a handful of moth balls and throw them under our back porch (where the skunk dug the hole to get under the house) and also throw another handful of moth balls under the house in the crawl space”. He said that all types of rodents and snakes HATE the smell and it bothers them a lot and they will avoid the area like the plague, & that after they have cleared off for a few weeks and we know they are gone for good, we can repair the holes and keep them from coming back. He said that the smell of the moth balls will filter up into the house for a week or so, but that the camphor smell is far better than greasy skunk oil glands that are getting warm and filling the air 🤢.

My question is- will this hurt our piggy, or will it torture her to be in the house while the scent of the moth balls is in the house? Will this harm her? She is technically a rodent and has a great sense of smell, and I don’t want to cause her discomfort, but we can’t keep letting a skunk live under our house (& under our bedroom at that!). We don’t have a second story to put her in (further away from the smell) and since the moth ball smell will be coming up thru the vents/floor- we can’t just put her in a room that doesn’t have heat blowing in it (or she will freeze!). Even if we hired a person to trap the skunk, we were told we that we would need to put moth ball under the house to keep new skunks from looking for shelter, because even if we fixed the holes, they will just dig new ones unless we use the moth balls to convince them to stay away. So we are stuck using moth balls it seems no matter what.

Has anyone had a piggy and needed to use mothballs at the same time? We were told the mothball smell will only last a week or so where we can smell it, but at this point it is our only option. We are new to our area and don’t have it know anyone that can take our piggy for a week to watch her and we can’t board her (and she’s so sensitive to change!).

Am I over thinking this, or will this be a problem for her? We can put her in a bedroom that has the vents closed off and use a space heater during the day, but she’s always a few feet away from us all day, it seems cruel to shut her away for a week in a bedroom by herself. Anyone have thoughts or ideas, or will she be fine with some mothball smell exposure?

Oh that sounds like a bad situation, smelly old skunk! Could you open windows so you get some ventilation into the house? I don’t think the camphor smell would harm your piggie, perhaps look to get some lavender oil that you can place on small pieces of paper tissues in a bowls around the house? Might smell nicer and not so pungent, good luck 🤞

This is a new situation for me but if I was going to go ahead with the mothballs I would at least try and contain them by putting them in a little net or a box with holes punched in. That way if it didn't work to repel your skunk or if it did start to distress your piggy you would at least be able to remove the mothballs in one go rather than scrabble around under the house trying to scrape them together!

Hi!

If you cannot move your piggies out of the house fora week or two, please move them as far from the source as possible (if necessary into a smaller space). Keep the door closed as much as possible and air the room regularly.

Oh no! Poor you! Don't use the moth balls to get rid of the skunk. Put a radio down there on a talk type station and the skunk will move on as they don't want to be near people. Several of my neighbors have had skunks and they said this is the best way to get rid of them and racoons too. My mom had a skunk that was digging up her garden and she used cayenne pepper to deter the skunk, so that could be a useful thing to try too; mammals don't really like spicy things. Or if you do go the trapper route, they need to take them really far away like the next county so the skunk doesn't wander back and make sure you seal up the hoe

This Old House has a great write up about getting rid of skunk smell. How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell

Right now I'm really glad I live in England! I'm trying to imagine what that must smell like and even imagining is not nice
