Ok- so I need some advice. I’m in the USA and for the last week or so we have had a FOUL smell invade the house every time the heater has come on (& it’s worse at night) and it’s been 20-35* F (-6 to 2* C) outside 24/7 so it’s been running a lot.
We had the HVAC guy come out today and he has told us that we have had a skunk burrow under our house and is spending the nights sleeping up near the heater intake area, which is why our house is overwhelmingly stinking of rotting wet trash that someone is trying to burn (it’s seriously foul smelling and there isn’t anything we can do to fix it but get rid of the skunk).
He recommended that we take “a handful of moth balls and throw them under our back porch (where the skunk dug the hole to get under the house) and also throw another handful of moth balls under the house in the crawl space”. He said that all types of rodents and snakes HATE the smell and it bothers them a lot and they will avoid the area like the plague, & that after they have cleared off for a few weeks and we know they are gone for good, we can repair the holes and keep them from coming back. He said that the smell of the moth balls will filter up into the house for a week or so, but that the camphor smell is far better than greasy skunk oil glands that are getting warm and filling the air .
My question is- will this hurt our piggy, or will it torture her to be in the house while the scent of the moth balls is in the house? Will this harm her? She is technically a rodent and has a great sense of smell, and I don’t want to cause her discomfort, but we can’t keep letting a skunk live under our house (& under our bedroom at that!). We don’t have a second story to put her in (further away from the smell) and since the moth ball smell will be coming up thru the vents/floor- we can’t just put her in a room that doesn’t have heat blowing in it (or she will freeze!). Even if we hired a person to trap the skunk, we were told we that we would need to put moth ball under the house to keep new skunks from looking for shelter, because even if we fixed the holes, they will just dig new ones unless we use the moth balls to convince them to stay away. So we are stuck using moth balls it seems no matter what.
Has anyone had a piggy and needed to use mothballs at the same time? We were told the mothball smell will only last a week or so where we can smell it, but at this point it is our only option. We are new to our area and don’t have it know anyone that can take our piggy for a week to watch her and we can’t board her (and she’s so sensitive to change!).
Am I over thinking this, or will this be a problem for her? We can put her in a bedroom that has the vents closed off and use a space heater during the day, but she’s always a few feet away from us all day, it seems cruel to shut her away for a week in a bedroom by herself. Anyone have thoughts or ideas, or will she be fine with some mothball smell exposure?
