I cant really tell but my grandad says the hay I'm using for my piggies bedding is awful stuff he said it felt more like straw. ")
I only buy the one from pets at home the 3kg bag one i think it is.
It defenitly says hay on the front but we now think its straw x please answer on this x

straw is yellowish and very course ... and the strands are a lot thicker can you take a picture of the hay ? x

Some types of hay can feel much like straw - as can some cuts of hay. The cut of hay usually dictates it's qualities e.g.

First cut - mainly stalky
Second cut - half stalky half leafy
Third cut - mainly leafy

There are other factors to hay quality that can affect how it feels as well. The hay you are buying from Pets at Home is likely to be meadow hay, which is typically a softer type of hay than, say, timothy.

Another batch or brand of hay would probably suit your guineas better, at least until the PAH hay quality improves.

I can just say, I'm using the Pets@home one and it's alright, so unless you have a bad batch or they've packaged Straw instead of hay, your properly not using something to rough. I test it by how it feels to dish out. I had one packet of this horrible hay that had thorns in it, so everytime I dished it out, my fingers were bleeding... I ditched it :)

iv just swapped my hay, as the other 1 i had was quiet spiky, n i did find that i endedup wih the tinest lil bits all ovre the floor, i trod on it once n never again it wa shorrid so i though I'm not keepin my piggies on it, n bought a really nice thick one

I have started getting mine now from 'just for pets' it's 3.99 and is lovely hay.

I had the same situation with a bag of hay- different brand though, the stalks were large and it was yellowish rather than green, but once the bag was opened the smell was definatly hay. The girls couldn't get enough of it.
