My 7+ year old sow Delilah has been on and off sulfatrim for a few months now due to a URI that keeps coming back. I've had many piggies and used this medication numerous times, however this new bottle the vet gave me has a light fishy scent, I don't remember this medication ever smelling like this before, usually it doesn't smell of anything.

Normally they give me brand new 30ml bottles in the original packaging/bottle (by Virbac) unopened, but this time they've only given me about half of it in a different generic brown bottle and it has this smell. To add to my suspicions Delilah suddenly has foul smelling soft stool and is off her veggies even with fibreplex, she has been on sulfatrim many times and has never had any negative reaction like this. I normally don't even need to give fibreplex because she does super well on it.

I'm worried the medication they've given me is 'off' and it might be causing Delilah's digestive upset. They did tell me there is a shortage of sulfatrim right now (they initially tried to sell me a bottle for £150 which is absolutely ridiculous, it's never normally more than £15) so all of this weirdness combined is concerning me. Should I continue giving it to her or stop and call the vet? Does anyone else here have a bottle of sulfatrim by Virbac right now, if so can you tell me if it has a scent? It might be normal I don't know... I'm already withholding veggies and she is getting fibreplex to hopefully help the gut issues. Thanks

Definitely query it with the vet. Sulfatrim doesn’t keep well once opened. It starts to lose its efficacy after about three weeks.
