Is she lonely?

I adopted Bridget and Molly back in the summer, their owner was desperate to re-home them and I took them in. they were older than I would have liked (6 years old) We sadly lost Molly just before christmas. Bridget didn't seem to suffer at all in fact she became incredibly cuddly and would greet me with an excited wheek when I came downstairs in the morning or home from a long shopping trip. She enjoyed long cuddles in the afternoon and would wheek when put back in the cage to let me know she was not ready to go back.....Well since the lovely weather started I have moved her out to her hutch and run and she has undergone a complete personality transplant, she runs away from me if I open the bedroom compartment to say hello and if I persist and try to stroke her she rumbles at me! Is she unhappy outside? I did think of getting her a friend when Molly died but she seemed so happy and content being with us indoors. . I did see two 8 week old girls in need of a home not far from where I live BUT I have an adapted nero 3 for the winter months which would not be large enough for three piggies!

Sorry for the long rambling post...Just dont know what to do! Should I just bring her back indoors?

Before you think of getting her some friends, which she may or may not want, would it be worth trying her back indoors again and see how she gets on? Is it possible she's had a scary experience while she was outside and on her own - perhaps when she was outside last summer, having Molly with her made meant she was comfortable being outdoors?
I only put mine outside during the day if I'm around, otherwise they're in my living room - but I've actually come to the realisation that where I thought being on grass in the fresh air would be wonderful for them, it's not. They eat some grass, and then are much happier when they come back in to their cages. Funny little things.
Let us know how Bridget gets on.

Words of wisdom Sue...Thanks so much.

I will bring her back in again tommorrow, she seems so much happier in here with me and as I dont work I am here most days every day, so she gets loads of attention. During the hot spell I put the sunbed next to the hutch so i could talk to her, soft eh?! I know what you mean you think that they would be happy outside on the grass and in the fresh air but she comes down for a drink a quick munch of grass and then it is back up to the bedroom again, mind you she is a little old lady!

Thanks again for the reply and I will keep you updated on her mood

Could not wait Sue!

Went into shed and got her indoor cage out, put all the newspaper in , vetbed and hay, food and water bottle etc then went out to fetch her, put her in the cage and then went to prepare her salad, I dont know where you live but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't her wheeking from here!

Definately think i made the right decision and she will stay in here from now on. :smitten:

awww she just missed having you around. I had to put my piggies in my bedroom the other day while i painted and they hated me for it. They like being in the centre of it all in my livingroom. xx

Flora and Fleur hated being in the hutch and they had each other but they love being indoors and act differently. They now live in my shed with another 2 girls. Funny how certain things change their behaviour. Hope she is settled now. :)

Hiya Girls,

She is snuggled up on the upstairs level fast asleep! Until she fell asleep her eyes were following me everywhere, she so missed being with me....awww gold bless her! :smitten:

The little darling, and how wonderful that the "problem" could be solved with such a simple solution. I'm so glad - she's happy again, and so are you. Sigh .... luvverly.

They are funny little creatures, my 3 are in two cages in the living room too. Doesn't leave a lot of room for OH and me, but the piggies take priority!

LOL Sue, Yes problem sorted, thanks so much for your advice. My husband thinks I am so soft when it comes to Bridget and then I catch him feeding her dandelion leaves he has picked from the front lawn!

Quick update!

Came down this morning to be greeted by one happy little pig! She ran towards the front of the cage so I reached into to stroke her and she immediately started purring! When she saw me head off into the kitchen she started wheeking like mad, I was going to make a cuppa but had to get her veg first LOL!

She will stay indoors now as she is obviously not happy to be on her own outdoors.

Well, glad you listened to your little piggies requests! :smiley6600:

Good piggy owner! O0 O0

thats excellent news..... funny how the piggies request always come before your own needs. xx

I agree! Sometimes they can't wait to go back into their hutches - usually when they have had enough they stand by the side of the run when they hear me, look up as if to say "hey, mum I want to go back in now". Yes, funny little things. ;D

Glad to hear Bridget is happy again. Perhaps it was too big a world out there for her.

Thanks for all your replies girls, she is certainly back to her old self and once again a very happy pig :)

Aww that's a lovely story - I think they are happier when they are where they can hear things going on. I keep Nemo in an indoor cage on a stand next to the fridge - his favourite place - its amazing how they hear the fridge door opening isn't it? ;D
