Hello I am concerned about my 5 month old baby Mabel because I’m starting to hear little raspy voices/noises come out of her and I am unsure if she is developing respiratory issues Or if it’s a new sound she has came up with I have documented some videos of me holding her because it’s the only way I can get her to make the noises for me on camera although I’ve been hearing her do it while she is eating her hay so I figured maybe she’s getting hay dust in her nose but also I am kinda feeling it in her chest when I pick her up and shes trying to squeak I needed a second opinion on if this is coming from her chest or in her nose and if this is something I should really be concerned about and take her to the vet the thing is I can’t afford to take her to a vet right now so I’d like to know if there’s any way of treating this at home please give me some advice

I'm not sure how I can attach the video it’s saying it’s unable to use files from my gallery

I took my new 4 month old boy Bear to the vet after I heard him sneezing soon after he came to live with us. Bear was to be a friend to my Finn, a 5 year old boar.

My vet, Dr. Jayne stated that Bear had Upper Respiratory Infection and put him on Baytril for 10 days.

According to Dr. Jayne, Upper Respiratory Infection could spread to other piggies so she recommended Bear be put in quarantine for an entire month, so Bear was separated from my Finn for an entire month.

Someone more experienced will be helping you but in the meantime, would you check if your new baby piggy is sneezing?

She isn’t a New Guinea pig I got her At 3 months old and I got her a friend a couple weeks after that and she was a little under 3 months and they have been healthy as can be. Mabel sneezes sometimes but not often I haven’t heard it recent anyway i tried putting a pan of hot water near their cage to let her breathe that in about 2 hrs ago and I actually haven’t heard her make the noise since so maybe that helped

Please have her checked by a vet.
While they can get hay dust up their nose and due to their narrow airways any obstruction becomes quite noisy, any raspy or clicky breathing coming from the chest needs to be checked by a vet.

A respiratory infection is a serious health issue and any suspicion of one needs to be checked by a vet - there is no home treatment for any issue particularly not for a respiratory infection.
An untreated or undertreated respiratory infection can cause long term damage. A bowl of water can help them breathe more easily but it will not cure a bacterial infection, only antibiotics will cure it.

You don’t need to separate her from her friend for a URI.

Switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh her daily so you can more closely monitor her hay intake.

We cannot host video directly so any video needs to be uploaded to YouTube first and then a link posted to it here.

When Bear came to live with us, my Finn ended up with an eye infection after having a play date for an hour. I took both Bear and Finn to Dr. Jayne. Bear was given Baytril for 10 days, and Finn an eye ointment.

Dr. Jayne recommended Bear be quarantined for a month after seeing both boys.

That’s fine but in the case of the OP, separating wouldn’t be recommended

She’s not doing it at all anymore she sounds completely normal now and still uses her voice regularly for her squeaks which is normal she’s very happy today in fact , do you think I should still get her checked ? The noise happened anytime Id pick her up yesterday but not at all today I don’t even feel anything in her chest anymore I feel like the hot water really did help but let me know if I should still go get her seen by a vet
