Hi, so I bought 2 guinea pigs, a cage, and a cardboard box. They swallow it, but I’ve heard it doesn’t cause much harm. Anyways, I’ve been worried my cavy’s cage is too small and could use fixing. I would like some help and a rating :)

Well need measurements to really know, my setup is quite similar but we’re building a new wooden cage in roughly two weeks

Hello and welcome!
Looks like you’ve made a nice start. However I’m sorry to say it does look a little bit too small. But with the added bit that you have made, it could be sufficient. just need to re-organise. You could put fleece down as the floor on the run area instead of that box. and then like Sophie b’s setup you can put in things like tubes and a hay box. Guinea pigs must have places to hide, boxes up side down, pigloo etc.
And their food bowl should be ground level to the piggies :)

I’m sure others will give you some good advice too :)

Eating the box won’t hurt them, you’d be surprised (and horrified) by what they can eat without doing themselves damage! Highly coloured things with lots of printer ink should be avoided though.

I agree with the other comments that a rearrange might switch things up a bit. Guineas need a bit of space for a mad moment. Maybe a more square shaped box tipped upside down with holes cut through it so they can hide/run through it. Guineas love hiding. Old toilet rolls stuffed with hay are fun (for them at least!) just give them different things to explore and do and they’ll love you forever (well, between that and food of course!)

Best wishes with your new pals!

Usually I give them little tunnels and a cave but I didn’t take it in this picture. Thanks for the advice both of you!

There are some pinned threads at the top of this forum with pictures of people’s shop bought cages which you might like to browse through, kind of shows that there’s no ‘right’ answer in many respects (except on minimum sizings etc) and might also give you some ideas of things that you want to experiment with in your cage too 🙂

It’s a great solution for a small cage. I would find a large cardboard box and fill it with lots of hay so they can burrow into it and have a good feed x
