Hello I’m worried my (just about) 4 year old female Guinea pig Pumpkin may be bloated.
We ran out of green leaf lettuce last night and the store was already closed so I gave her a few pieces of romaine (which she has had with no problem in the past.) and 1/4th of a yellow pepper and a bit of cilantro, which are part of her normal diet. At about 4:30am i hear loud farting, i thought it was my dog but it was coming from her cage. I took her out and put my ear up to her stomach, it sounds quite upset.
I’m phoning the vet later today as their not open at the moment, I’ve been holding her and massaging her stomach. I read that a bloated stomach is solid, hers is soft? She has also been eating and drinking (maybe drinking more than usual.) here are a few photos, she’s sleeping on me right now ❤️ (sweet girl.) She ate her poop before I could get a proper photo, but it looks normal to me? Thank you, I’m just really worried.

Hi

If her belly is soft and she is still eating normally, then she may have at the worst some mild to medium bloating but she is not suffering from severe bloat and also hasn't got any gut stasis issues whatsoever.

If you have concerns, please take her off any fresh food for a couple of days and allow the gut to settle down again. Stop massaging. If she has a healthy companion, you can do a live healthy gut microbiome transfer, which is pretty effective if done correctly so the gut microbiome is still live when it reaches your girl's gut; otherwise some probiotics from a pet store or online will do the trick as well; bene bac is the recommended brand for your part of the world.
You can find the 'recipe' for poo soup (less gross than it sounds) for the transfer in this link here: Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

If you ever have a piggy with a very tight gut, especially one that sounds hollow when you gently knock against it, then that is a serious emergency indeed. Especially when they are also very flat and not eating.
Digestive Disorders: Not Eating - Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement)

All the best!

PS: Please accept that we cannot tell you just from a picture and without a hands-on examination whether a piggy is bloated, pregnant or whether it is just their normal figure.

Of course, I just needed a second opinion so I could put my mind at ease and get at least a bit of sleep haha. I’ll keep an eye on her and keep in contact with my vet!

Definitely see a vet if she is getting worse and not better or if her digestion is not settling down again.
