I've brought my two 9 month old piggies in for the winter.

They have been in a hutch during night & a run through the day but now its colder they've moved to their winter home (our conservatory). Yesterday I went to The Range and purchased a large indoor cage which I thought would be large enough. Its 120cm x 60cm.

They look ok in it but I'm worried that its not large enough as they have been used to a large run (which hubby made) although they usually huddled in a corner in the run! The thing is I can not afford a really large indoor cage but wonder if I should let them have a run around the conservatory for 1/2 hour or so each day.

As I'm new to guinea pig parenting I would really appreciate your advice-thanks:)

I think 120 cages are ok for 2 x guineas but in all cases, the more space the better. Have you considered making a C&C cage? They're cheaper than store bought cages and you can get really creative with them (multi stories etc)

Well done for bringing your piggies indoors:)

A 120 cage is generally the recommended size for a pair of piggies, although as MI has already said the bigger the better. Your cage should be fine as a base for your piggies and if you can give them floor time to stretch their legs in your conservatory they should be very happy.:) You can add tunnels and upside down cardboard boxes to floor time to add fun and it also gives them a little more security whilst exploring new places. Make sure you take some photos, we love to see pics on TGPF

They should be fine. Our 4 live in a similiar size cage but we have this in the living room and the cage is open usually 9 hours a day so they come and go as they please. They also have pet snuggles outside the cage should they want it.

We must do something right as Twinkle has had a URI last week (weight drop of 100 gm over 2 weeks) but put the weight on in a week while on baytril.

Thanks.

Ive let them out of the cage at the mo and they are rumaging around the conservatory although fleur has hopped back in the cage!

Ive looked everywhere for these C&C grids but have drawn a blank can anyone recommend where to get them.

Also I notice that alot of you put down fleece instead of hay/straw. Where do you buy this from and do you change/wash them every day?

if * dont mind me asking how much was the cage?
ive just brought mine in and their cage isnt bug enough so need an alternative as cheap and soon as possible and weighing up my options
thanks

You can always extend the cage space by adding a mezzanine floor - a barbecue grill with a tray on top that has been cable tied to the bars is a cheap and easy to remove option to create more space (like a walk-in hay loft) inside the cage.

amberannielola-the cage was £39.99 from The Range. Wiebke thats a good idea will get hubby to construct something:)

The cages I have are the ones from The Range :) mine are indoor piggies all year round so always live in them but they do get run around time outside of the cage.

It is not possible for me to have a C&C cage and these cages suit my troop fine.

All happy piggies :)

This is what my hub made for my 2x4 ft cage:

Am deffo going to make an upper floor (well hubby will) will post photos when done:)

I increased and increased space for my 4 and currently they use

2 floors cages 2.4mx1m and under recliner sleeping area 2mx1m so I'd say 6.8m2 for 4 pigs. :)

Thanks.

Hi,

I got mine from ebay from Grendle Enterprises £36.00 plus p and p for next day delivery. You get loads of grids, connectors and wire tires.

I put down an old mattress protector, fleece, and litter trays. I change mostly every day, not because they are smelly but because I love to change it so they are clean. They have a separate box for hay so it doesn't go on the fleece. The fleeces are £3.00 at Primark and are very pretty but you get them cheap from loads of shops.

Hope that helps.:)
