I've been researching neutering in males with the ultimate goal to pair with females, however I've had so much anxiety over the neutering process, I've heard so many horror stories (one just this morning) and it's really putting me off the entire thing.

My boys are currently living next to eachother in a C&C so they have full sight of eachother, they chat all day but just won't share living space. As much as I know neutering and pairing with females is the best choice, I don't believe that I am currently comfortable enough to neuter them, or that I realistically have the funds to pay for the procedures, a new cage and then adoption costs for the females or the room in my bedroom, as bad as this is.

I do however have the money to expand their C&C so they both have more space but still have some contact with the other, so my actual question is:

Is the contact of living next to eachother enough for boars for now? I do want to eventually pair with females but my current circumstances won't allow it and I feel so bad about this! They both seem like very happy boys at the moment so I'm hoping this is enough contact for them for now.

If they can hear, see & smell each other than it is perfectly fine for them to live side by side. In the wild there would be the alpha male with his harem and the bachelor boys would each live separately but close enough to the main colony & each other. This way they were a part of a colony of piggies & would all graze grass in close proximity. And the bachelor boys were close enough to try & steal girls away to start their own harem!

Can you not try boar dating and get them each a male friend they like?

No, I've enquired at my local rescues and none offer boar dating or would consider rehoming with another male who had previously been in a scuffle with another :( I've got very few rescues in my area, even less for small animals, none that are really knowledgable :(

This is comforting! I'm going to ensure they have their own harems one day though, when space and money is a little less tight! Thanks :)

That seems very limiting on the rescues part. :-(

Very, I also have no access to a car so that really limits the area of rescues that I can realistically enquire too, which sucks. I tried explaining the premise of boar dating to a guinea pig rescue quite close to me but they refused to accept that males could live together :( They also didn't like that I had a C&C cage! It was a very frustrating conversation!

Doesn't sound like a very knowledgeable rescue!

It was such a shame! They were very passionate and caring but they seemed set in their opinions, I would love to boar date but they seemed very against the idea, especially when I said that they were seperated because of a fight :( But yes, they seemed less knowledgable then I expected in the boar bonding regard. They are the only specific GP rescue even close to me too :(

Take comfort in the fact your boys will be fine side by side.

Hi there
I have Jack living in an indoor cage pushed right up against Pumpkin and Boo's Ferplast 120. Jack gets on with Boo, but not Pumpkin. Pumkin and Boo are completely loved up :) and I dont want to disturb their bond.

I had to completely separate Jack for about a week which was very distressing for both of us as he was trying to fight Pumpkin through the cage, but he has settled now and they all chat to each other, sit either side of their dividing walls and seem quite happy. I do know that Jack needs a friend as a long term solution but as we are (fingers crossed) starting major building work to our house on Monday which will put two rooms of the house temporarily out of action I dont have the space just now.

The plan is to find a friend for Jack, but since he seems to have settled next door to Pumpkin and Boo I feel that it can wait till the building work is over. I'm sure yours are going to be fine until you can find friends for them too.

I agree that its frustrating that some rescues dont agree with boar bonding :(

I'm glad it isn't just me in this boat at the moment :) I think they'll manage a little longer, they're both popcorning as we speak so I think they're happy with the arrangement also!
