Is it worth getting my boar neutered?

I have two guinea pigs a male named Skyler and a female named Pumpkin. We understand that guinea pigs are social creatures but we have to keep them separated because we don’t want any baby’s (even though they’d be super cute.) they do get along pretty well the only time they fight is when the male tries to mate with my female (she gets annoyed) so we we’re thinking about getting the male/skyler neutered. I’m just worried because we don’t have any true exotic vets in our area, To go to the exotic vet it would cost almost the same price to get there and back as him getting neutered. So it’d probably have to be a VERY inexperienced vet! We can’t afford to buy them each a companion either, because our pigs go through quite a lot of food as it is. I was just wondering if you guys have any ideas...
Have a good day/night 😊

Living as neighbours is an acceptable alternative when needs must, but living in the same cage is always the best situation. I would consider it. Perhaps save up the money in the coming few months and then get him done. I wouldn’t go for an inexperienced vet, even if they’re cheaper.

The other alternative (though I think it’s not what you’d want) would be to find a rescue to pair one of them up and surrender the other. A last resort of course!

What do you mean they go through a lot of food? Hay is the biggest part of their diet. Do you mean that, and it’s expensive to buy?

Lastly, please don’t out them together at all, even supervised. Each meeting is a bonding for them and can become stressful and frustrating when they can’t see it through to the end. Mating can also take the blink of an eye, so you can’t risk having them together at all.

It’s mostly the hay that I was talking about, but they do go thru veg pretty fast. And it’s not me who pays for them. My mom foots the bills (which I feel horrible about, especially with how much we have to bring them in to the vet. That’s one of the reasons we can’t get them each their own cage mate.) I will definitely call around to see if I can find a vet with experience in my area. But if I can’t find one I will try to persuade my mom into bringing him to the exotic vet. And I definitely don’t plan on rehoming one, I think the only reason I would do that is if for some reason I couldn’t care for them anymore. And I stopped letting them out together a couple of months ago.
Thank you for the suggestions!
