recently i've been doing a thing where i go on gumtree and look at guinea pigs/stuff and i see a lot of guinea pigs that aren't homed well. just today, i was doing this and saw two 4 week old boys (being sold with accessories) living in a rats cage where they were being fed straw (instead of hay), rats pellets, using dog shampoo, there was a wheel in their cage and they just weren't being treated right. it broke my heart to see that so i sent the seller a message about the boys. would it be wrong for me to purchase them from her instead of adopting from a rescue?
i'd love to hear your thoughts x

It wouldn't be wrong but you need to be prepared for what you may be taking on. These boys could be in very poor health and costly in terms of vets bills. Depending on how long they have been kept like that and what's wrong with them they might not even live that long.
On the other side this could be a breeder getting rid of old "stock". You never know how genuine someone is being on gumtree and if it is a breeder you might save these two but provide the space for two more to live in the same or similar situation

Hi!

It is great that you want to help those piggies! Badly kept free to a good home free-ads piggies often end up in rescue because they are considered at risk.

If you are worried about the piggies and have a good rescue within the area, then please contact the rescue so they can hopefully take on the piggies, conduct any medical care and bring the piggies back to good health; while you adopt some healthy piggies available for adoption from the rescue instead.
This way you free up the necessary space in the rescue but allow the badly kept piggies to get what experienced and medical care they need; especially if you do not have the necessary epxerience.

Adopting neglected and traumatised free-ads piggies can unfortunately be a very steep and expensive learning curve, especially for any new owners! We have seen that a few times with well meaning but inexperienced members who vastly underestimated the challenges involved. :(

Keep in mind that rescues have limited space. If people don't adopt, then they can't take in any new piggies in need of experienced care. Cavy Central have got all the experience to know how to bring neglected piggies back to health and how to socialise them.

And if you want you to do something especially good, please consider adopting a pair of stuck in rescue piggies, so you can hopefully help several piggies in need of rescue space down the line, not just the pair in the rat cage... ;)

That would be very ethical and of the best benefit of all parties involved! :tu:

If only we could rescue all those that we see online who dont look like they have the right living conditions... I dont look as it's so sad
Same here and the huge load of chinchillas too, breaks my heart.
Lovely you want to rescue the piggies @ourpiggypalace :)
My two RB lads Sheepy and Reggie had been at their rescue for nearly 18months when I adopted them, the longest of any pigs she’d cared for, the sweetest lads and very loving, and blooming loved the extra spoiling when they arrived! So definitely agree with @Wiebke about long-term rescue pigs! :D

It’s heartbreaking, if you can save them and give (or find them a good home)them a home then that would be lovely x
I was looking the other day on a similar site and there was 6 piggies in a wooden box so small they could hardly move. local advert too, I felt like sending them a very stiff message but sometimes it’s not worth it, people are so ignorant or just couldn’t give a monkey’s!

thanks a lot all :) i really appreciate it, i think i’ll take the boys in for a bit and then give them to the RSPCA rescue.

Please contact Cavy Central Guinea Pig Rescue! They are a specialist guinea pig rescue who is used to dealing with neglected and malnourished piggies. They are by far the best place for your piggies in your state; as they are the oldest guinea pig rescue in Australia and are running to a very good welfare standard; one of the best in the whole of your country (I know a few of them, including the lady who runs Cavy Central).

I will contact Lyn about the boys but I’m not too sure about if I can take them to the rescue as it’s just a tad too far for me to get to. I’ll see if i’m able to though :) thanks a bunch x

All the best for speaking with Lyn. If it is too far, perhaps a volunteer can help with meeting part way?

That is how I have sometimes picked up piggies I have adopted from further afield or helped with transporting rescue piggies between rescues over larger distances in a kind of relay.

yeah sure thing! i’m just waiting for a reply from the “registered breeder” and then i’ll let you all know

Not wrong at all. You are pretty much rescuing them. It's so hard to see them in those conditions. :(
