Hi cavy slaves,

One of my pigs has a scurfy back, I'm not sure whether it's fungal or mange so I would like to treat for both.

I would like to give him a fungal bath with ringocide shampoo, followed by a treatment with Xeno spot on.

Just wanted to check if this was safe - I'd heard that eg if treating with anti-parasite shampoo you should not use spot on for at least 48 hours? So wondering if this is the same with ringocide and spot on

Thanks

It would be best to have your piggy seen by a vet for diagnosis and appropriate treatment, rather than treat for both issues on spec.

Rather than home treat for possible issues, I'd recommend seeing a vet for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

In the end I suspect this approach will be more cost effective - pet shop treatments can be too weak to treat these issues properly, and your piggie winds up suffering for longer and going to the vet anyway. Also, if you do require vet treatment later the 'crime scene' is no longer intact and this can make it harder for them to diagnose accurately.

Additionally, all your pigs would need to be treated, not just the one you refer to in your post, so whatever it turns out to be doesn't get passed back between them. Be careful in case of ringworm as it is also transmissible to humans and other pets.

I believe there are a couple guides which may help in either case:
New Guinea Pig Problems: Sexing & Pregnancy; URI, Ringworm & Parasites; Vet Checks & Customer Rights
Ringworm: Hygiene, Care And Pictures

More experienced members may be aware of other resources. All the best for your pigs!
