Recently, I've developed an allergy to the old bedding they used at the rescue I got my piggy at, and I was wondering, is it okay to bathe my pig because of the allergies I'm getting from her fur, or should I wait and see if it goes away. I don't want to seem selfish, but its really frustrating me and my allergies are already through the roof, some advice would be helpful.

Bathing can be stressful for a piggy. Have you tried grooming wipes for small animals? I know you're in the US; you can get them at the big chain pet store here in the UK so you may be able to get them over there. They're basically wet wipes but safe for small animals, a quick wipe over may remove any of the allergens caused by the old bedding :D :tu:

I’m actually at the store right now, would baby wipes work? I’ve heard they do work

I'm not actually sure 🤔 I suppose if you can find all natural ones, the water based kind with no chemicals in?

I’ve tried the wet wipes but she still has the smell/dust of the bedding, so I’m just gonna wait a while before giving her a small bath, nothing too stressful, hopefully I can just rinse her off with water and that’ll be it

Have you tried combing her with as fine a comb as will go through her fur? A flea comb from the dog/cat, if it'll go through, could probably remove dust and debris.
Yes, I have, but I still have a runny nose whenever I pick her up, which is odd, as I’ve never had an allergy to any sort of guinea pig, so I’m gonna wait a few more days before considering a full on bath.

Baths are stressful for piggies.
If you are suffering allergies have you consulted your doctor.
A number of members take antihistamines to control allergies caused by hay etc.
I really don’t want to give her a bath unless really necessary. When I had to give my other girl a bum bath, because it was dirty with poop, and would NOT come off with wet wipes, she hated me for a bit after that 😞

Please don’t bath her as she’s not dirty. I would speak to your doctor about how (and if) you can manage your allergy. Did you change the bedding you reacted to? If so it may be that you’re reacting to her. Bedding shouldn’t still be on her skin.

What do you usually do to manage your allergies?

I take an allergy pill, and I took out the trash earlier that had all the old bedding in it and my allergies have cleared up. No more runny noses today!

I give bum baths to Finn, my 5 year old long hair Peruvian. He has been getting bum baths all his life and during baths, I take out all the hay stuck in his bum hair.
Long haired Finn needs his haircut all the time, and after his bum bath is the best time to cut his hair, because his hair doesn’t fly everywhere when wet.

Nail cut is stressful for him so I do it another day.
