Here's a question for you!

When trying to get the pigs out for some handling should you take the lid off their bed area and pick them up or should you wait until they venture out?

if you can, teach them to come into some kind of pick-up conveyance like a tunnel, a suitable cosy, an upturned hidey or a padded cardboard box. Pleace a little veg or herb treat at the back and let them get comfy with any new addition forst for a day. Establish a ritual with always using the same words in the same tone, so your boys learn what is up. Be lavish in your praise. It may take some time (a few weeks), but once they realise that a pick-up is a lot less stressful for them, they will cooperate better.

Here is a facebook link to a video about how I have trained my big group. This was taken about halfway through the summer; it took me about 3 minutes to get a dozen piggies from the lawn back to their indoors pen. By the end of the summer, things used to go even more smoothly - and they remembered the drill in the following year!
Please don't expect instant marvels! Building up trust is a slow, very gradual process, but it is worth being patient and persistent.

Thanks, will try that. What do you mean by herb treat? They get plenty of fresh veg like cabbage, celery and carrots..

@Wiebke that's amazing, i can't wait to let my six play on the grass when it's gets hot enough as last year they we're too tiny and would have escaped!

i keep trying this with a cozy sack with coriander in or lettuce but they've got a little wise now and sometimes just refuse to go in it or they steal the corriander and run off LOL :))

@andy naylor by herb treat I think Wiebke means fresh herbs such as coriander, basil, parsley or mint. I've had to resort to fresh basil to bribe my most reluctant piggie to get back in to her house so that I could put her back in the cage after carpet time.

Lettuce should not be fed daily, especially not iceberg lettuce. Look what is the favourite veg or herb of your boys and you use a very small quantity of that as a bribe! More often than not, the guts win out...

It is a bit easier with a group as they want to be together; I use a bit of fresh grass for the trip out to the lawn.
