Hi, I’ve had my guinea pig, Cosmo for about 2 years all ready and all his life he has been sneezing more than usual about 10 times a day. But five months ago he got a uri and the vet put him on baytril for about a month or so. And even after treatment he has still been sneezing the same amount. He has no more signs of a uri but maybe it’s something else I’ve been wanting to get him a brother but I get paranoid thinking he is still sick from all of his sneezing, could it be allergy’s ? If I get him a brother could the New Guinea pig get the same thing even if it is just allergy’s ?

Hi and welcome!

The odd sneeze is not uncommon; piggies can sneeze purposefully whenever they give themselves a piggy wash as a means to clearing the nose.

As to a companion, please read our singles and boar guides; they have both a chapter on how to best go about finding a companion they get on with as it is not as simple as sticking a baby boy in the cage:

Hi, thankyou for the guides and Sorry for not replying sooner but I have an update and I got my 2 year old guinea pig, a baby friend and I got him two days ago but I’ve notice right away when I put them both together the baby was so attached and I think he was trying to chase him like being dominant but my 2 year old just doesn’t care that he is in the cage he just goes off and does his own thing. He has never followed the baby guinea pig and sniffed him. My 2 year old doesn’t bite him or show signs. For example my 2 year old was in his igloo and the baby guinea pig (rudex) goes in there to try and sleep by him and all my 2 year old does does is walk out and sleeps somewhere else, is this normal? I feel like my 2 year old gets annoyed when there is someone else is the cage cuz his whole life he has been a single guinea pig but a year ago I started taking him out of his cage and let him roam all around my room (guinea pig proofed) and living room and ever since then i have him by my side like everyday for at least three hours hold him petting him giving him loves, so maybe he likes being by himself ? Sorry for my the long paragraph and one more thing does that mean they are not bonded yet ? Since they haven’t sorted out who is dominant or submissive. Is it common for guinea pigs not to see who is dominant and just being chill

They won’t necessarily cuddle up together so it’s normal. And as he’s always been alone then he may not know how to interact with other piggies. Did you introduce on neutral territory or did you just put the baby in with the two year old? And how old is baby? He’s probably wanting a ‘father’ figure.

Make sure you have two of everything - bowl, bottle, hay station, hide. Also make sure the cage is at least 150x60cm. 180x60cm would be ideal.

Another thing to bear in mind is that boars go through their teenage phase from 4-14 months of age. So the baby may/may not try and take over as top-pig.

Some single guinea pigs that have sadly missed out on the formative weeks simply don't know how to interact and a very few have stopped regarding themselves as guinea pigs. The latter won't be agressive, they are just not interested in interacting with other guinea pigs. I would be sorry if you had one of true (if man made) single piggies.

Thankyou for replying will he soon grow out of it ? Once the piggie gets bigger ?

I did have him separated for two hours so he won’t be overwhelmed then he after an hour he started zooming all over and poocorning so I put them together but to where both of them can hide. Petco said the baby is either 3 months or 4 but idk tbh he looks really small. And yes I did research on bonding a baby and a adult if it doesn’t work out in three months when he matures am going to make them side by side. But since I’ve posted I think my 2 year old has gotten a little use to him following him it’s weird because the baby will sleep on his butt and my 2 year old doesn’t like that, but they do eat together and I do find them sleeping in the same hut everyday should I only start to worrry if they are drawing blood and not rumble strutting

If you’ve decided to put them together you can’t then separate. The behaviour isn’t something to worry about so the older boy should be fine.
