Sorry to post on here but I can’t find the safe list of antibiotics on here. I’ve seen it’s listed as safe on the MD vet manual but I’m so anxious lol. Does anyone have any experience with oral liquid doxycycline for use in guinea pigs. Thank you! Xx

Hi

What have you been prescribed it for?

Doxycycline is safe but it has a tendency to wipe out the gut so please also make sure that you have plenty of probiotics and recovery formula handy.

Ah man that’s a shame:( we’ve not started it yet it’s being ordered in. She’s been diagnosed with a urinary infection containing bacteria called aerococcus viridans. I wonder if you have much experience with this. There is so little information on this bacteria online.

Sorry, I am not having a medical background myself but if your vet is convinced that doxy is the best antibiotic to help against that specific antibiotic then you'd best go along with it.
Especially as penicillin is a big no no for guinea pigs but seems to be the first go-to antibiotic against this bacteria but it is testing as resistant to baytril related antibiotics, which is normally the first go-to antibiotic for guinea pigs. Which is what I have found after some quick googling. I hope that this makes more sense to you now?

You will have to tough it out for the sake of her long term wellbeing; keep telling yourself that.

Just incase anyone comes across my thread in the future. Poppy has been on doxycycline since last Saturday and last day is tomorrow. It has surprisingly not affected her digestion at all. However we’ve been giving her probiotics twice daily as well as twice daily critical care feeds as suggested by our vet to help with everything. It stains bright yellow and ours had to be kept in the fridge. ❤️

Thank you for taking the time to come back and update us.
It is super helpful and I am sure someone else will find this thread useful in the future.
I am glad to hear that Poppy has done well on it.

Thank you for your feed back. It is great to hear that Poppy is doing well.

I am glad that you have had a good ride with doxyclycline. It is just one of those antibiotics where if you have a piggy with a sensitivity to it, when it gets bad, it gets really bad.
