Hello!
I have 2 guinea pigs ( a female and a neutered male) and they are very close. We are hoping to get another female pig and start a small herd. Would this affect their bond and cause arguments and does anyone have any tips for bonding?
Thanks!

Hi!

In my experience, a happily bonded couple is not usually well-disposed to welcome a third wheel on a perfectly balanced waggon. Trios are the most difficult constellation to get right without getting an outsider problem of some sort or other. 1 boar 2 sows trios only work out well if the sows are great friends, otherwise you end up with a major headache. Any mixed gender trios of my own were only a success if the sows were best of friends before adding the boar. :(

You'd either better leave them as they are or consider adopting a young pair of sows, so your current sow's leadership is not affected. Four guinea pigs have somewhat different small group dynamics and the two girls (if well bonded themselves) have each other to fall back on, so that is much more likely to work out.

If I were you, I would contact Palace Piggie Rescue in Crawley; they are your closest good standard rescue and will allow your pair to come and date at the rescue under expert supervision. You will be in safe and competent hands there and won't have to worry about pregnant sows etc. as they practise a full 10 week pregnancy watch for all incoming sows.
