Just had a phone call askin me to take in an unwanted guinea pig, problem is they don't know if its male or female. Once sexed, is it possible, if it turns out to be male to introduce him to my 6 month old boar? The pig needin homed is around a year and a half x

It's possible to introduce the two at this age if you keep in mind that the 6-month old is going through his hormonal puberty phase and will be determined to show your 1/1/2 year old that he is turning into a super powerful man.

This means being prepared to give them a lot of room - above the minimum required room; scratching up on your guinea pig battle and dominance knowledge and being aware that if you keep separating them too soon, you won't be helping their situation; and make yourself aware of all the buddying up techniques we manipulative owners use to confuse and scare our pigs into forgetting they were mad at each other.

You should expect squabbling until your younger pig is about 1 year old.

I wrote up the manipulative techniques in another post, but if you want them here I'll re-write it all out again.

Thanks for replyin. At the moment my 6 month old is in with two older boars. When i got them i didn't know as much about gp as i do now. The two older boars get on well and tolerate the young one, but he is becomin more aggressive, or at least tryin to, there's been no actual fightin but alot of teeth chatterin. Therefore, i had been startin to wonder if i should remove him, or if it would pass, (older two are around a year).

So, this is how i thought puttin him in with the new one might solve it. Could i put them more or less together right away?

If you knew where the techniques were posted i could have a look, save * writin it all out again. :)

Generally boars are best in pairs - 2 is company, 3's a crowd! It's possible you could end up with 3 single boars, so would probably be best to pair the youngster with another piggy and leave the original 2 together?

Thanks Sophie,

So do you think he would settle in ok with the pig needin a home, bearin in mind that the rescue pig is a year and a half? I thought from from readin on this forum that it was always best to introduce a baby when puttin two new ones together? x

hi just read that you have three boars together that is a definate no no in most cases also as hard as you try the new piggie may not fit in with any of the other boars, maybe neutering and pairing with sows is a better idea?i have 3 that get along fantastically but i have just stumbled across a great trio by chance i have rarely heard of it working long term anywhere else, are you a rescuer?

Hi, no i'm not a rescuer, although i would love to be if i had the room, think i'm just becomin known locally for my love of guinea pigs! x)

My two older boars are very placid, i've become aware (a little late) that usually 3 is a crowd, i'm just hopin that once the young one gets through the hormone stage they may live happily together. There has been no actual fightin or blood drawn, just, as i said alot of teeth chatterin. Keepin an eye on them all the time and if it becomes serious i will remove the baby.

Was thinkin to take the rescue one and keep him on his own for the moment beside the others cage and maybe introduce him slowly to the youngest one. It's just, as Sophie said, don't want to end up with all single boars as i don't have the space x

yes i understand the best rule i can offer with boars and pairing is with one outgoing/dominant piggy and one shy/submissive piggie tend to make better pairs.
of course the age factor comes into it aswell but it helps with opposite personalitys
